Fastest P3 Xeon is a 700 with 2mb cache. Fastest P2 Xeon is a 500 with 2mb cache. I'd recommend a SuperMicro or Intel board, and go with whichever you like based on the options you prefer. Going with a i840 based board is gonna cost you in memory since the RIMMs must be paired, but going with a 440GX based board you won't have much of an upgrade path and not have as many options. SuperMicro also has some of their own chipsets, but I am not sure how well they perform or how compatible they are.

Are you doing it for the high cache, or 4 way SMP? If you want the cheaper Xeons and are only using two, PIII's are about the same. ArsTechnica has an article on that.. there's like 512k Xeon's that are PIII's remarked, + $$$.

And, there's some beautiful motherboards with the ServerWorks chipsets:

i just want to do it for the heck of it
*gg*

and since those P2 xeons are so damn cheap
i wanna build a rig with 2 x 450Mhz 2MB l2 cache
the pentium3s are to expensive
and speed is not that important anyways

one question remaining....do i have to use registered dimms on those supermicro boards?

and what would be a good case..

thx
