I've been waiting for this to happen for years, a simple way to backup my favorite programs onto computer or either DVD. Unfortunately capture cards are far from simple, in fact over the past 6 months I've been through at least 6-10 different cards with none of the results being really adequate. The closest thing I've had success with is the ReplayTV and Tivo, those boxes do a great job of timebased recordings, however their downfall is there no way to make a disc based recording.
I don't understand why its so difficult for one of these giant electronics/computer based companies to make a TV recording product that reflects the current technology methods available today. Video tapes are about as outdated as floppies these days, the tapes lose quality everytime they are played, they are easily prone to tangles within the VCR and maintaining space for a mountain of tapes is another challenge within itself. On the other hand DVDs can potentially hold more video with much better image resolution and sound quality, they take up far less space and they never degrade in quality no matter how often you play them.
So the question is why are video recording devices so far behind the times? Video tapes are essentially an 80's technology format, its time to put that 20+ year old standard in the dirt.
