I havent seen my sister in over 6 years, and we havent had the same address for over 10. She also lives in a different state and has a different last name.

What are the chances they find out?

These things have a way of screwing you over in the most messed up manner imaginable. No matter how big the company is, some time or another, there will be a bulletin, a picture or story about you and la-di-da, your sister will probably recognize you. That or for some reason you have to meet/work with her at a convention, offsite or whatever project.

Oh, and stupid policy.

It would be beyond easy for them to find out.
A simple background check will uncover it.

They might, they might not. The problem is, what if you get the job and everything goes well for a couple years, and then somehow they DO find out? Will you be fired on the spot at a time when you could be unprepared for being out of work? What if jobs are hard to find at that time? What if they fire your sister too, for violating policy?

There are a gazillion places to work, and only one of them prohibits you from working there. Why pursue that one?

I would definately disclose the fact. A lot of times they just don't want to hire people who are married, but if you don't disclose that you have a sister and they do find out they would have a good reason to fire you.

Yeah i would disclose the fact in an email for records sake, just so they can't say 5 years later, "ZOMG, YOU HAVE A SISTER WHO WORKS HERE? WHAT DID WE TELL YOU WHEN WE HIRED YOU!?!?! YOU'RE FIRED!"

stupid policy btw, as long as you don't work in the same dept and nobody is the suboridinate to the other, i don't see what the problem is.

Any background check will disclose relatives. I had to go through slightly more stringent ones for work (thank you sec) and it pulled all sorts of odds and ends. One of my friends works in HR and let me see what got pulled, and you would be amazed at the depth of information that can be pulled from public records.

policies are created for a reason and usually for a good reason the time they are instated, you arent qualified to make the statement that its a stupid policy when you dont even know the industry.

For some reason, while reading your post, I thought of the porn industry. No family members = good policy in that business.

You can always plead that you didn't know in the future... heck, you haven't seen her for 6 years? It's been about 3 months since I last saw my sister who lives 1 1/2 hours from me... I know what her occupation is, but I have no idea who she works for.

edit: also, from what I've seen of other companies, "no family" means no household members of your family.
