I want these type of WUs

Saw this result on Orangekid's proxy. I want to get work units that will go that fast.😉

Isn't it the speed of your comp that makes you get it done faster? All those weird people with these machines that run over 1000 mhz......bah, just because they can afford it....i'm still at 850...anyone want to donate an athlon?

Work units that are submitted with a CPU time of only a few seconds or minutes is because of three reasons (in order of probability)

1. There is too much radio interference in the WU, so the client "gives up" because it will never detect anything
2. There is a hardwarre problem with your computer, such as dodgy RAM (i've had this on one of the assimilations i made at college)
3. You are using a hacked client

The first one is the most common, and will give you one result like this, and normally not very many of them. The second option will give you lots of short WUs from that computer, and it needs attention. The third, you are a total %$*"%£$"!^"$ who only wants to get to the top, even if it means sacrificing the integrity and point behind the entire project.

And yes, Lithium381, the CPU speed is normally the only factor that affects the WU time, as well as the architecture of the CPU. Athlon XPs rock at Seti, due to their good FPU (Floating Point Unit), whereas K6-x processors suck at Seti because they have weak FPUs.

I disagree. It is the major factor, but L2 Cache, RAM (DDR, etc) RAM settings can play a big part too. If CPU speed were the only factor, then how would you explain why my Tualitin core PIII850 lappy gets 5hr21minWU avgs, my Xeon 700mhz getting 5hr17min WU avgs, while my PIII933 gets 8hr avg, or my PIII1Ghz gets 7hr30min WU avgs?

😀

Oh, and since it was TheCool1 that submitted the fast WU, I'm willing to bet it was due to #1 or #2 on CBW's list. 🙂

RaySun2Be- You got something going wrong with those 933 and 1GHz boxes. My 933@1000 averages 6:10 and not overclocked it averages about 6:25.

I have to agree with Ray on this one- my 1800 Athlon DDr (amd chipset) normally does the WU's in 3:45- 4:00 range, my 1700 (OC'ed to 1800) Athlon Sdram (KM133A) is going 4:30-5:00. I'm still not sure about whether or not I've got the KM133 "optimized", but there is a definate performance differential .

BTW, just for informations sake, I checked the times at the Seti Timer site- I found it interesting that if I checked the time for a Tbird (sdram)@ 1533- the time comes out about right (4.8 hrs) for my Palimino KM133

One of the reasons those are so high is that from 8 to 5 M - F they run PowerPoint presentations that suck up CPU. :|

Plus one is Compaq and one is IBM, neither have been tweaked as far as memory settings, etc.

I have an XP1800+ oced to 1587MHz that takes on average 3 hours 25 minutes, my XP1600+ running at stock averages just about 5hours, my TBird 1.0 oced to 1.3 averages 5.5hours, and my Duron 750 averages 10hours.

The Tbird and 1800+ are both running with DDR, while the other two are running with generic SDRam.

Seems like I read somewhere that the SETI people throw in some bogus WU's occasionally just to check things. Does that sound right? I know I have had a few of these WU's that only take a few seconds....and I get full fredit for them.
