As many of you might know I live in the town of Fairbanks Alaska. I was browsing our power companies site about paying my bill, I stubble across a project they are building right now. It's called a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and when completed will be the most powerful UPS system in the world, in terms of Megawatt output for an amount of of time.

Once linked up with the other BESS units, It will output 40MW (enough to power several small towns) for 15 minutes or a lower wattage for a longer amount of time. Then main site with take up the space of a soccer field and will contain 13,760 batteries.

Amazing stuff, especially since this is based out of a little town in Alaska. 🙂

Their is active work ongoing in the development of hydrogen powered fuel cells for residental and commercial use . I saw the white papers on this recently. They will be deployed by the power companies,at first. One for a home looks to be about half the size of a large refrigerator. This should be a reality within 10 years.

15 minutes from GVEA + 15 minutes from my UPS = I can make it through all these damn half hour outages we've had lately.
