I've just finished watching Lower Decks and I love it for what it is.

Historically:

TOS: I think I've seen a few episodes; from what I've seen it doesn't appeal much to me.
TNG: Yes, the episode quality is inconsistent, the first two seasons were very much a case of needing to hit its stride and not repeat TOS, but there are high quality episodes in there. 99% of (my personally) memorable posts are from TNG. I've got TNG on BR.
DS9: I have this on DVD. There are some bad episodes but overall I think it's a more consistent quality than TNG was and the plot continuity helps.
Voyager: Like TNG but less memorable. The last time I watched Voyager I skipped maybe the first two seasons. It's OK.
Enterprise: I got bored of it after a couple of seasons IIRC. I found the temporal cold war plot to be a typical sign of an overly convoluted narrative that the writers haven't got anything meaningful to write about.
Lower Decks: LOWER DECKS! LOWER DECKS! :)

I haven't seen other more recent series like Discovery, Brave New Worlds, Section 31 (etc.?).

Basically I want some decent sci-fi which IMO means that the writers gave me something to think about the way things could be in the future and how the human condition is affected by that, or interesting little plots like 'The Inner Light', or when an alien species like the Klingons have their culture significantly fleshed out by the longer-reaching plotlines in say TNG.

Any suggestions? It doesn't necessarily have to be Star Trek, I enjoyed 'The Expanse' in recent years for example.

I'm making the GF watch Babylon 5 with me. I've probably seen the series 5 or 6 times at this point. The first season is a little rough around the edges, but it's a fantastic show with well-written characters who aren't just cardboard cutouts.

Babylon 5 for absolutely fucking sure. Firefly has a cult following for a reason. One short season, but a great group of characters. The Ark isn't bad. That's not so much a recommendation as it is a 'see what you think' thing. Battlestar Galactica, the newer version is world class. And of course Galaxy Quest(movie), and The Orville.

BTW, the Section31 movie is a POS. Just a generic action movie. The new Star Fleet Academy is excellent, for the first two episodes I've seen, but it's definitely NuTrek. Strange New Worlds is also fantastic. I've never hated video more than I've hated Discovery. I like Trek, so I forced myself to watch it all. If it was anything else, I'd have bailed a couple episodes into the second season(gotta give them a chance to right the ship).

You might want to give Enterprise another chance. Last season was great, and I thought the whole thing was at least /acceptable/. They got fucked by the studios. Too much meddling, then cut short. If they went the full 7 seasons, they'd have a dedicated fan base, and it would still be making money.

@lxskllr What is NuTrek in your opinion?

What was wrong with Discovery?

Maybe I'll give Enterprise another chance some day (after all, series are generally good fodder while I'm doing the ironing), but IMO Enterprise suffered from the same failing as Voyager: Both started with a premise that they could discard a load of TNG luggage (e.g. The Prime Directive, an expectation that Starfleet must react to situations according to rules, experience and unflinchingly doing the right thing), and neither took the opportunity from what I saw, and for Enterprise to take the opportunity, it would have had to by definition take it from the start what with lack of experience and rough edges and so forth (Voyager could have got increasingly burnt out the longer it was away from Starfleet). Voyager in particular felt like a way to pass the time in Star Trek Land, a chance for Star Trek geeks to zonk out on the sofa after work, rather than a chance to write great episodes. Instead of good scifi we got biomed gel sessions and skin-tight outfits on agreeable-looking ladies: when I was ~15 I would have thought it was great.

BSG and Firefly I already have on disc :) I tried 'The Orville' but there was one episode that induced so much cringe that I simply had to permanently stop (a couple of crew members were undercovering on an alien species' ship and one was asked to perform a sermon).

I'll give B5 a try, it does seem to be generally rated pretty highly.

(NuTrek)Quippy/hip dialog, flashy effects, style over substance. Classic Star Trek is a very formal show. The dialog isn't what real people would say. It has a specific style, and is very formalized, but it works well; like Shakespeare. Even the new shows I like(Strange New Worlds/Star Fleet Academy) suffer for it. They have flaws I have to look past. Also, short seasons eat shit.

Discovery wasn't Trek. There was almost nothing Trek about it. It was a space show with a Star Trek™ sticker put on it. Unprofessional behavior from alleged elite professionals, all about the feels, and it was the Michael Burnham show. She did everything. Everyone else was just a set decoration.

You should watch brave new worlds, it is fantastically written. Unless you're really jonesing for sci-fi, skip discovery. I liked it but I'm extra thirsty for sci-fi.

For other series, check out Dark Matter, unfortunately cancelled but an awesome series.

Orville is basically a love letter to star trek. Ignore anyone who tells you otherwise and watch it. Does morality episodes better than basically anything in the last decade.

All the new stuff is soulless IMO. Picard did some great fan service at the end, but the show sucked. Strange New Worlds is watchable at least. Spock is not Spock. I don't care how they try to explain his behavior at that age. Goofy shit.

TNG
OG
DS9
Voyager (I would have shoved Neelix out the airlock. Worst character among all the older shows)
Enterprise

In that order for me.

B5 - I was not a fan of Sinclair. Tron was a good addition. Garibaldi was a well written character. G'Kar and Londo were outstanding. Londo's character arc was my favorite. Flounder being his assistant was great too.

I did not watch BG until a good number of years after the series wrapped. I need to do a rewatch this year. It's been long enough that it is no longer fresh in my mind. Fairly certain number sex...I mean 6 (I'll be in my bunk), could have made me do some of the stuff Baltar did.

Seasons 1 & 2 of SNW are actually good. Season 3 sucked.

Most of what's been made lately is garbage unfortunately. Discovery, Picard, S31 movie, etc. Lower Decks is however excellent.

Give me a series set in the absolute clusterfuck after the end of the Dominion war where the power structure of the Alpha Quadrant is scrambled and the Federation is hopping around like a one legged wallpaper hanger to put itself back together.

If someone doesn't like Londo, they are not welcome within 100 miles of me.

Watched the first 2 episodes of Star Fleet Academy, and Holly Hunters voice in the first episode was making me :(
I was like WTF I hit rewind every time she spoke.
Finally just used Closed Captions.

I liked it. Got potential. Also we old as fuck we gotta make room for the next generations .... drum roll tishhhhhh
