I want my *&%# FISH!!!!

I caught a huge walleye... definitely trophy size (30 inches, I don't recall how many pounds)
Took it to the taxidermist most recommended for fish.. outstanding work, and had won a ton of awards..
But, I was warned that he was slow.... it might take 3 or 4 YEARS before I saw my fish.
Oh well, I thought... It's worth the wait for the quality of work he does.

Then, his father got sick... then his father died... then this, then that, and every excuse under the sun.

I don't care about getting my money back...
I want my @#(*$ FISH back - MOUNTED.

Unfortunately, in NY, all you have to do for a taxidermist license is send $5 to the state to register...

Any suggestions how to light a candle under his ass? I want my fish and I want it soon. (I recently called him... "I'm catching up... probably in the next month or so..." same story every time...

How about you ask him for it?

I recently called him...

The jerk. He made fliers last year for his taxidermy business... but told a guy who he knows I'm familiar with not to tell me about the fliers. (he has a regular job and posted the fliers all over the company)

I can't even find anything on the DEC site about it...
I'm thinking I'm going to give the DEC a call about it tomorrow though...

Had a similar situation with a cabinet maker for some custom $30k wall cabinetry. I just gave up and said, im calling back tomorrow, you need to give me a date then or I am calling the better buisness bureu. Wouldn't you know it, he had a date for me the next day at noon 🙂

How longs it been so far. 3-4 years is crazy.

considerably longer than that... like a decade..
I've always been afraid to pursue it aggressively, out of fear that he will rush the job and I'll get a crappy mount.
I just rattled off some emails to whoever's address I could find at the DEC, hoping they can get me in touch with the proper people there.
And, I rattled off emails to all sorts of people in the NTA (national taxidermists assoc.)

Thought: I wonder if I could take him to small claims court - get back the skin, and have HIM pay for the job to be completed by another taxidermist of my choice. Today's prices are around 3x the cost of what I paid.. If I get it back, it's going to cost me another $600 if I went to get it mounted myself...

In small claims court, would there be an allowance for not being able to enjoy my mount for all these years?
Would I be able to include inflation in my losses?
How do you attach a value to something that has sentimental value?

10 years?!

It's just a fish man, get over it!!!

WTF kind of bizarro world do you live in where it's ok to wait 3+ years for something?

btw if he isn't done by now isn't it just a pile of bones?

A lot of taxidermy is 2+ years... particularly difficult mounts.. (usually things like bears)...
But, this guy does the scales one at a time, rather than air brushing the whole fish, making it look like a big hunk of plastic that's been painted.

I'm thinking about small claims court... Since I'm most likely out a trophy fish - anyone think I'd win a claim for the cost to replace the fish: a trophy walleye fishing charter (about $600 was the most expensive charter I could find), plus cost to mount the new fish?

10 years already!??!?!?

WTF!!!!!!!!

he's a freaking super slacker.........

i bet I could read a book on taxidermy and mount that freaking fish in less than 3 montsh.

10 years?
he fvcked up your fish and is afraid to tell you about it

my LM bass (7lb) took 2 years

I'm pretty sure 10 years is slightly past any statute of limitations on small claims.

I saw the skin... it had been tanned years ago... just waiting (forever!) for him to put it on the frame (which he had 3/4 completed many years ago)

Just a $500 fish. I'll start getting over it if you'll quickly paypal me $500 to help me make up for my losses... 🙂 😛

Note: cost for a just a cheap plastic reproduction: $395 The real skin mounts done by good taxidermists are much more expensive.. I paid for a full mount (not just a one sided mount where half the fish is out of view) on a piece of driftwood, mouth open, body curved to the right.

I wish there was a way I could fix it so that no one would take their mounts to him....
picketing in front of his house or something...

I can see you going to his house and he and his family are enjoying a nice fish fry.
