I want another Tacoma :/

Several years ago, I wanted a truck - a black 95-04 x-cab 4x4 V6 Tacoma. I bought one in December of 2005. Mild lift, 33's, upgraded stereo...I loved that truck. I lost it in May 2008 to frame rot. Toyota, being awesome, cut me a check for far more than I actually paid for the truck. Tacomas were stupidly expensive, so I thought I'd upgrade to a Tundra.

So, I did...2005 x-cab 4x4 V8. Great truck, but I didn't really care for it. I have nothing bad to say about it, but it just didn't do it for me...so three years later, I bought my Subaru and sold the Tundra. The Forester is a blast...wanted the AWD for NH winters, but since I'm now in AZ I have it for sale and I snagged a hell of a deal on my CTS-V.

So here I am, with a CTS-V as a daily driver and I keep looking back at 10-15yo Tacomas, wishing I had one again. I'm even toying with the thought of selling the CTS-V along with the Forester, picking up a used high-miles Tacoma, and banking the rest. It'd be cheaper to run (insurance, fuel, registration, tires), but not nearly as much fun on the road. Then again, isn't that what the MR2 is for?

Halp! Does anyone else once have that one vehicle that they've always wanted, and despite having something that's objectively far superior, still miss the old one? This caught my eye today. High miles, which is okay (the 5VZFE 3.4l V6 is a tank), and some offroad body damage, which is also ok so I won't feel as bad if I scratch it. I'm almost afraid to go look at it for fear I'll buy it before I sell anything else..then I'll go from dominating our driveway to the driveway and the street as well...

A couple pics of my old one, for old times' sake..

Anyway, /blog 🙂

Don't sell the CTS-V. What year is it? The current generation or the previous generation?

Sell the Subaru and buy a Tacoma. Problem solved.

Heh that does solve the problem, but I'd like to buy a house this year and having three vehicles doesn't help so much with saving for a down payment. 😛 The CTS-V is an 04 with sunroof, ~69k miles.

Okay, then:

Sell the Subaru.
Don't sell the MR2 or the CTS-V.
Buy a house.
Allow finances to adjust.
Buy a Tacoma.

We all have to set priorities. 🙂

My wife happens to set my priorities for me, so it's easy. I tell her what I want to get, and she tells me the order of events that must precede my proposed event. The plus side is, she never says no. She also directly benefits since I am severely motivated to complete the prerequisite interim steps in order to lock in my desired purchase. When you get to make your own decisions, things get stickier.

For instance, I often have a long cycling wish list and we have a set amount of disposable income after retirement, short and long term saving, mortgage, auto payments, etc. When I wanted to buy a power meter for my bicycle, she said: "Sure, but since we just bought you a set of carbon wheels for your bike and new kits, this month, I am going to replace my Coach bag, buy a Dyson, and put any left over in our investment fund. You can have the power meter next month."

Fine by me. She bought a vacuum cleaner. Joke's on her.

Nice pick. I don't know what it is, but I would love to have a beefed up tacoma as a daily driver.

I have the same thing with a miata. Obviously I'm in a better situation then you, I only have a DD which is my G35x with 64k and my Sukuzi GS500f bike. This summer i do plan to add a NA miata and/or a SV650 to my list.

Miata has been on my list of wants for a LONG LONG while. Just debating on where to get it, around midwest rust belt or somewhere 5-6 hours away. Problem is if i go 5-6 hours away for a miata and that person lied about condition or something is off i wasted my time/money. I haven't had much luck with miata forums having many stock ones for sale around me, mainly stuff in CA, FL. TX is a little too far for my likings.

That one keeps tempting me each time he reposts it. I dont want to go look mainly for the same reason, i might just take it home on the spot.

There's a lot to be said for selling your FXT and CTS-V, buying a cheap truck, using the $$ for a down payment on a house, then buying a 2nd Gen CTS-V when the house is squared away.

Toy Tacos.... Never had one but when I did 4x4 they were always fun to run with and ride along.

I've always had a thing for the old Bronco II's. Those things were like an ATV on the trails. I had one with a hi-po 302 in it and T5 trans with dual cases. Nothing like putting it in granny-low and letting the idle pull it out of nearly everything while I got out and winched or whatever.

People would look at me like I was crazy when I climbed out the door but then realized how slow it was moving and what I was doing.

Probably the best suggestion here. Since you got such a good deal on the CTS-V, get out from under it while the going's good. Maybe even the MR2. Go the utility route until you square away the home purchase, and then pick up an even sportier sedan in the future.

I can't make a profit on the MR2, but I can on the CTS-V..I have to keep something fast in the driveway or I'll get too bored...haha

Yea, that's what I was thinking, but I didn't want to insult your project car. Older cars like that are worth more in your garage than on the market.

Dont give up on the cts untill you get a season in. That way you dont have any lingering regrets.

Use it for a season and then decide. Find a crazy cheap tacoma and go big!!

How much for the SV? Would make a nice gift for the wife....

I thought I'd put it up on CL for $2k and see what happened - not really sure what they're worth these days. It's a 2000 with about 25k on it.

That's really not a bad idea..just found a crazy deal on that truck and really started thinking about it hard. I keep telling myself there's always another deal...but rarely do I find two in a row for the same vehicle (I bought the last great deal I found on a Tacoma and that was six years ago). I'll bide my time and wait...there's bound to be another deal eventually. 😛

Don't make purchases based on emotions. Want is an emotion.

That's ridiculous. Most of what people own is based on want. I could be driving a 1989 Corolla everywhere, but I don't. Why? Because I want something nicer/newer/faster/better.

Toyota bought my truck back in 2008 and I've missed it ever since.

Will a tacoma of that gen be able to handle the high heat of AZ and have a high powered A/C?

Those would be my first two checks on the list.

I picked up my eventual wife based on a want. Just saying. All of my car purchases have been emotional to some degree. Sure I kept an even head and didnt go out and buy a GTR last year even though I could have afforded it.

That's actually a prime reason for him to sell the Suby. The AC is definitely underpowered.

Tacoma shouldn't be bad as the cab isn't huge.

This!!

1. Fix up CTS-V for cheap
2. Drive around all season like a BAWS
3. Sell CTS-V at book value
4. Profit

5. Buy house
6. See house value continue to drop the day after you bought it 🙁

Sounds like a plan. Priorities change and house > any car.
