I'm out of contract with T-Mobile and would like to switch over to an unlimited talk and text plan with them for $79.99 per month. I have an iTouch and really like the apps and such, plus my wife uses it to Skype during the day. I would also like to be able to text.

My idea is to get the $79.99 per month family plan and a couple of unlocked iPhones. Is this possible or will T-Mobile slap on a data plan once they detect the change in phone? I really actually don't want a data plan. I just want WiFi Skype at home, a few apps, and the nice touch keyboard for texting.

IIRC, T-Mo doesn't enforce data on out of contract phones. If you had bought a smartphone on a 2 yr contract, then, yes, they would add it.

One way to be sure about it is to activate the plan on a dumb phone and then move the sim over. Just make sure to turn of cellular data on the iPhone.

AT&T will scan the network for the IMEI and if they detect an iPhone on a contract without data they will add it for you, for your convenience :D

Not sure if T-Mobile has been doing the same, you might get off lucky and that they don't, not sure.

T-Mobile doesn't enforce data plan requirements on out-of-contract plans or on their prepaid plans. My daughter has been using an original iPhone that I bought on Craigslist and fixed for over a year without data and without issues. And beyond it just working, the reps all said there was no issue with not using data on an old iPhone. They said the only time data is required is when they subsidize the phone as part of a contract.

Get an iphone off of craigslist and then put it on $45 unlimited with Straight Talk.

yup, tmobile doesn't care as long as you didn't buy the phone subsidized from them.

if you're getting the phone elsewhere, and you're not in contract, they won't stop you.
