I have an HP psc 1210xi all-in-one and this piece of frikken crap is ALWAYS having problems. I don't think it has very good compatibility with windows because it shows up as "unknown" in windows device manager which annoys the crap out of me (yes Ive downloaded all the latest drivers from HP) It says there are paper jams when there are not, it installs tons of unnecessary software, the scanner wasnt working for me today (it kept giving me this error "cannot communicate with printer" but when I print it goes through fine  wtf?!)

Can ya tell I frikken hate this printer? Stay far far away from it.

But what one should I get? A low price printer that works well. Im considering a laser printer b/c of the quality, and it just seems like they dont have as many problems.

I'm not sure about in teh USA, but in Canada, the Epson CX4600 is one of the best value AIOs out there.

Individual color carts (cyan, majenta, yellow, & black of course), card reader, & decent photo quality on a $120 Cdn. AIO!

If you can spend more money, maybe go with one of the Canon PIXMA series, but get one that has individual color tanks:

The MP7xx series are excellent quality, cheap ink & include dual paper loading & duplexers.

I have the Lexmark x5150. The thing is a beast, but it gets the job done quite nicely and is pretty speedy.

I've had an MP700 for the past couple years and love it. Ink is EXTREMELY cheap when purchasing generic tanks. Print quality is good and scan quality is excellent. Great for making copies.

I helped a relative select an AIO (all-in-one) unit after I did a bunch of searching. I advised him to buy the $250 Canon MP780. We installed it today and I have to say it is one fine AIO. A bunch of great features; scan, copy, fax, direct print from camera, auto doc feeder, auto 2-side copy, 2 paper trays, 5 seperate ink cartridges, backlighted LCD display. And, virtually SILENT! Picture quality is outstanding and auto software install is easy with no problems. Also looks great and is high quality construction. If I were to buy a new AIO today, it would be the Canon MP780.

I think it also comes in another model number, without a fax, for less money.

To dugweb,

Lots of better printer choices out there than the hp1210------but in all fairness to the printer, it sure sounds like its not installed right.-----not your fault either but the drivers you are using probably can't find some dll on your computer
and hence the install does not work------have had similar problems with one other HP and one Lexmark. And debugging that is a real bitch.

But to answer cockeyed question, there are three recently discontinued MP models that use the more desirable non chipped BCI-6 cartridges ------all based on the ip4000 printer engine

MP 750--------copy, print and scan----flatbed scanner not super quality
Mp 760--------copy , print, and scan--much higher quality flatbed scanner---good enough to scan 35mm negatives
Mp 780-----copy, print, fax, and scan---same scanner as in the mp750.

Decide what you need and then check prices. Some outfits are unloading these cheap.

The Lexmark X6150 all in one printer is one printer for multiple activities. With its multi-tasking activities, color printing, color copying, color scanning and color faxing is possible in single machine.

There are lots of excellent all on one inkjet printers out there that print, copy, and scan. The Hp 1210 may even be one also. Some also add fax to the mix.

In terms of all in one inkjet printers that can copy, print, scan, last a long time, and don't rip you off in ink consumable costs---------you are ONLY left with the recently discontinued Canon models.

But with all inklet makers jumping on the chip bandwagon, the marketing playing field is leveling and rip off will soon be the common denomonator--and Lexmark shall lead us to the promised land.

Pardon me, I'll just stick to my Canon MP 730 until hell freezes over. I can print, copy, scan, color fax, and print for less than a penny a page.-----what does it cost you OptyMyStix?-or have you ever even thought about it?

To Dugweb,

Just saw a post by reapsyo1 on the general hardware section. His suggestion is to not plug in the USB cable at the first software prompt. --check it out--might explain why you are getting a bad install.

The post is dated 11/25 so ch3eck it out.

Bottom line is that Hps are a good for nothing piece of junk. I had to make a costly trip to my local office supply store and purchase $100 worth of ink. If you want an all in one definatley get an Epson (they dont come with a USB cable so you might want to add $25 to your budget) For lasers definatley GO FOR A SAMSUNG. They have the cheapest costs for toner.
