I want a wii.

I know a few people who did the whole free ipod thing and got one. It took a few weeks of waiting, but they did receive them. This was back when ipods sold for $400 or so.

I would like a wii, but I don't want to stand in line or check bensbargain's wii tracker every 5 minutes. I don't care if I get one in 2 weeks or 2 months, provided I get one. If I can get one for "free", I'm all for it. Since Wiis retail for $250, I think it's possible to get away with a free one. (at least on the financial side of it.)

That said, a quick google search is revealing A LOT of different "free" wii sites. I don't mind completing a few offers, as long as I don't have to pay anything after all is said and done. That said, has anyone tried and successfully gotten a free wii through one of these websites, or are they still too gimmicky because of the shortage?

No they are not totally free (depending on the sites it will cost you anywhere from $20-$50 in trials/signups). Yes they do work. Yes you do have to sell your soul.

I did one of those free LCD monitor things a few years back, it took months of whoring my referral URL before I finally got enough sign-ups, lol. I think most of those things are legit, it's just a matter of doing the online "leg-work" to get enough referrals or signups. If you don't need a Wii before Xmas it'd probably be a lot easier to wait a few months and pick one up once demand has died down. Even if you still can't find one in stores I suspect after the holiday rush they'll get back down to $300-ish new on eBay, and you could probably grab a used one for $250 or less.

My friend did the Mac mini deal a few years back. He got it eventually but it took him a couple months and he ended up paying some people to complete the offers. I heard they changed the offers not too long afterwards to make it much harder to actually get anything out of them. It would probably be easier to just make a couple of phone calls and wait in line. after christmas it might be a little easier to get one as well.
