I want a truck.

I really like the look of the Tacoma PreRunners. I want something smaller with a V6, extended cab, possibly 4 doors. I've read a few reviews out there from various sources, all of them seem pretty good. I probably wouldn't buy it new, but at least a 2005 model. Does anyone here own one of these trucks or has had experience with one?
Most of my driving will be in the city actually, but occasionally I'll load a dirtbike and go out to the desert.

Any opinions/thoughts are much appreciated.

I have no personal experience with the Tacoma but where I live they seem to run forever and fetch big bucks even after 100K on the odo.

I pretty much have nothing more to add than what I said in this post. The frontier might be a bit more value for the dollar initially, but if you ever resell it I think you'd be happier with the Tacoma. I still love mine and I've had it for nearly 3 years now. This is the first car/truck that I've owned for that long and not yearned for something new.

I love my 04 PreRunner DoubleCab! Although I wish it had a bit more oomph, which the 05+ models provide. ~40K miles of mostly city driving and it's still going strong. I should reach 100K sometime next decade 😉

Since I bought mine nearly 3 years ago...I've put on 44K. Still runs like its brand new. I expect to keep mine AT LEAST 10 years if not 15.

Haven't been in a '05, but my '97 ran like new until the day I sold it. Other than routine maintenance I only had to replace 1 seat belt and the blower motor (twice) while it was under warranty.

Yup! Although @~40K miles, we're just beginning to break it in. I'll be interested to see what happens when I have 150K+ on it. Whatever happens, this truck will be what I drive until it falls apart (hopefully @300K+). Wifey wants a minivan now 🙁

how many miles did you have on it when you sold it?

50k. Sold it Feb of this year. So I averaged about 5k a year for 10 years. So I make no claims about high mileage reliability. Just that the truck held up and didn't deteriorate or fall apart over 10 years.

Yeah, I'm really wanting one now. They just seem so expensive. Like $20K+ for a used 2005+ V6 model. I think I'll stop by a dealership soon and see what they can offer me if I trade my current car in.

It seems like you should be able to get a brand new full size for that much.

After a lot of shopping around for used Tacoma p/u I gave up and got a new one.

The rather smallish discount for used one just wasn't worth it.

If I was you, I'd look for one of those dealerships that has a no haggle policy. The price on teh windshield is IT.

They don't tend to jack up the price due to demand etc. And demand for these seems high, particularly smaller (better gas milage) trucks like the Tacoma.

In some cases, used trucks were advertised for more than the brand new one I got.

Can't comment about other issues. I have only just now put 600 miles on it.

Yeah these things sure dont seem to decrease in value much like Ford/GM/Dodge equivilents. I haven't even been by a dealership yet. I have checked local dealerships websites to see what they list, and I didnt see much. I suppose I'd go for a pre 05 model as long as it has the TRD offroad package, despite them having the smaller engine. I'm wondering what I should look for as far as milage goes, how long do these things last? I'm assuming they will last 200k miles fairly easily.

I have an 07 Tacoma X-Runner all in all it's a good truck but the mileage suffers a bit with the 4.0 engine. I have no complaints yet aside from fair mileage it gets.

The Pre 05 Tacoma's V6 may not have as much power but they are built better than the current V6 and are better in gas.
My dad has a 00 Tacoma Xtra Cab SR5 V6 Auto (non prerunner) with around 130k miles, no issues besides weak brakes but that was there from the start.
My uncle has an 01 Tacoma Xtra Cab SR5 V6 Manual (non prerunner) and is pushing either around or over 200k miles now without any trouble. He did have a few problems with the MAF sensor going bad and 02 sensor

As long as you change the oil at regular intervals and do all the routine maintenance they should last a long time.
