I just want to say to my mechanic, "I'll have my secretary call you"

or "{insert secretary's name here}, cancel all of my appointments, I have a lot of work to do today" and close the door to my office and play quake

wouldn't that be grand?

...

I hate my job. Next wensday I'll get a make or break chance at a new one at double the pay. New office in walking distance from my new place, my own office, my own buisness card and a full staff of college inteirns (my age) to do my evil bidding. If half of that materializes, I'll start going back to church.

they are less common than back in the olden days

here you have to be a VP to have an "assistant" and a BIG time big wig to have an "executive assistant" or whatever title they have

I have an "administrative assistant", but to actually say something like, "I'll have my secretary/administrative assistant call" you is way too pompous. It seems the entire purpose is to impress those to whom you say such things. Everyone plays an equal part in an enterprise in my opinion, and a good secretary/admin assistant invaluable.

I used to be an executive assistant (for the CTO of a telecom company that went bust in '01). pretty fun job and I rocked at it, but the pay sucked and I got no respect.

When we moved into these offices we had an office setup, filled up, and ready to go for a "secretary".......Never happened though.:(
we just have student workers

We actually have to answer our own phones and go home to our wives if we want to have "nooners":Q:eek:;)

I had a secretary for 6 years as a VP and again for 2 years as a Division Manager. The greatest thing about it was not the fact that I could tell someone, "I'll have my secretary call you", but the fact that I would instruct them not to allow any interruptions or phone calls unless they were sure it required my immediate attention. It's hard to find a good secretary but one I had for a few years was absolutely the best.

Now, my wife is my secretary. :p
