Any programs that'll do this nicely? Or any PVR programs that won't gripe with my laptops crappy S3 video card?

Thanks,

Vince

Then get something like gbpvr and just don't use the pvr functions.

If your PC and TV have compatible inputs/outputs, there shouldn't be a problem. But you can't just cram a VGA cable from your PC into the RCA inputs of your TV, no matter how hard you try.

Try GB-PVR. It has PVR features, but you don't have to use them.

snapstream BeyondTV? or you can go the Linux/Unix route with mythTV or FreeVo.

I'm looking to go down that road soon. About how much would that cost me, total? And what skill level is required to do the modding? I've tried Xbox Scene but it was a bit overwhelming.

Beyond TV is FAR at Outpost every few months. It probably had the best front-end of anything out there.. The lastest box had a a free firefly mini (Infrared) remote included in the box!

Meh... I just noticed that they raised the price to $69, but that's still a good price with the $50 rebate...

You'll need a card with a hardware encoding to really take advantage of all the features... So, maybe this is overkill..

For a basic setup, about $200. You can usually find used Xboxes for about $100, then add in a hard drive and modchip. I would recommend having a professional mod chip installer do it for you. The best modchips are the solder-in ones. PM me with further questions; I'm working on a short article once I'm finished modding my Xbox later this week. You're right - Xbox Scene is very overwhelming. My article has an "Xbox Modding 101" approach to help point you in the right direction :)

I have a file server with TVersity plugged into my router. I play the files off of it wirelessly with a DLink DSM-520. This option will obviously cost you money though.

a pvr150 is like $40 sometimes...pair that up with myth(free), gbpvr(free), beyondtv($20) and an acceptable video card (radeon 7000 or soemthing) for $40.

For less than $100 you have your setup:D

Keep in mind that while the pvr150 mpeg ENCODER can ENCODE, it does not DECODE, and since that will be done in software, a hardware decoder like a good video card helps out TREMENDOUSLY

I already have a DVR from DishNetwork. I just download any eps of programs I recorded and want to save (For example, I had recorded every episode of Stargate, some on VHS some on my DVR once I got one, rather than trying to pull them off the DVR, and try to record the VHS tapes, I simply DL'
d the files. Is it legal IDK, but its a lot less work). Someday I'll get an HTPC working but not today.
