I want a PS3

Since I'm buying the console I'm definately going to get a PS3 instead of a Wii. We can only afford one, but to me a PS3 is a no brainer. We have a High definition TV and we don't have a blue ray player. I really like the fact that the PS3 takes advantage of high definition and that we'd be getting a Blue Ray player as a bonus.

She likes the wii because of the controller. She likes the interaction that it provides (I admit it's cool and I enjoy it as well). She doesn't really care about graphics so she doesn't mind the fugly games and stick figure characters on the wii. She likes older classic games like frogger and many of the old nintendo/atari style games. I love modern FPS and Sport sims.

What games are available for the PS3 that I can use to reassure her the PS3 is right for us.

Arent' there cheesy games like Qbert and Frogger that can at least be downloaded via the playstation3?

Take a look at Pixel junk monsters (PS store - like 8 bucks, and an expansion for the same price) It basically a co-op tower defense game that is very addicting. My wife and I have sunk quite a few hours into it and even managed a 4th place world ranking on one level.

If you are linux savvy you could install that onto the PS3 as well and have some emulation going, but I am not sure how well that works at the moment.

There are other decent downloadable games like bowling and pain, check them out too.

Get a Wii, seriously. Not because its better, but because your wife wants it.

So basically you're coming here to have us help you find ways to convince your wife that you should have your way....

I think, if you get a Wii, you'll get bored with it and stop playing with it within a few months. That's what happened to mine. I only ever played it when I had friends over or when I hauled it over to someone's house.

But get a Wii anyway. You can buy one now and play with it for a couple months, hopefully long enough to convince your wife that you don't use it enough to justify keeping it. Then you can make back 90% of what you paid by selling it on Craigslist, and get a PS3 instead.

She won't believe you that the Wii loses its charm after a couple months unless it actually happens. And if it doesn't get boring after that time and you still enjoy it, you don't really lose either.

Realistically, your wife is going to be more happy with the Wii than PS3. Suck it up, and do what's right for your marriage.

Well said.

You are likely looking at the 40gb that lacks the compatibility with the huge PS2 game catalog, so the titles that will appeal to her are far more limited as well.

Once you have the Wii, you can add the Wii Fit later, and I can think of numerous fun ways you can add that to the formula for a happy marriage.

Pretty much. She'll enjoy the Wii more.

I think there is a motion-control bowling game on the PS3, that might help convince her.

Wii now, ps3 later. yea cool games are finally coming out for ps3 but they will be cheaper later. (or can buy them used etc).

Only reason I convinced my wife to get a ps3 was because the ps2 died. And i've used it to watch more blu movies than i have played games on it.

Btw blu-ray rocks (make sure and use hd cable of sorts). My wife is a hardcore blu-ray fan now.

Wii first, and PS3 later. That's the way i did it. I passed the PS3 later on as a birthday present to myself ;-)

I didn't even ask. I just got the PS3. Then she bought me Rockband for my birthday. Now she plays rockband with me constantly. :)

LOL. Yeah..........

It ceratinly won't wreck my marriage by getting a PS3 over a wii. I mean it's my idea to get a gaming system. She'll play it probably 1/10th as much as I will.

I was just hoping there would be some game options that she might enjoy on a PS3 instead of bothering with a wii.

Well, I'll say one thing for sure - you, personally, will enjoy the PS3 more. The Wii is frakking BORING to play alone, and even the local multiplayer gets a bit repetitive after a while.

The other thing is that HD content doesn't seem cool until you actually see it. I can remember the first time I saw an HD football broadcast at a friend's house. I just stood there, in front of the TV, with my mouth hanging open at the fine detail. It looked like one of the Madden games, except of course that it was way better - the same pixel-perfect detail, but it was real people playing a real game. Since then, SD has seemed so much smudgier to me, and I was one of those people who was unconvinced that HD would be that big of a deal.

So I've changed my mind. Win her over with HD movies. Get the PS3 and agree to rent a few Blu-Ray chick flicks and watch them with her. She'll probably get more lasting enjoyment out of that than she would from the Wii.

There are some very fun PSN game downloads.

Pain, Pixel Junk Monsters, High Velocity Bowling (uses sixaxis motion), Calling All Cars and Super Stardust are all great games for under $10.

But if she is *Really* into the older games and "vintage" stuff, then you need an Xbox. The Arcade game library is fantastic.

Buy both and put them on CC then pay the monthly interest. It's win win!

Get the wii, get GameFly, play through what you want of its library (Zelda, Marios, Resident Evil, Metroid, ...)

If you run out of games to play, sell it. Otherwise it will be xmas and there will be a PS3 holiday bundle and/or price cut, and you can play the "but we got the wii for you in May" card.

It's a video game system, why should the female have a say? Does she listen to your opinion on what vacuum cleaner to buy?

Well it sounds like she doesn't play games as it is so why should she have a say in buying a game console.

Like I said, I have 100% decided I'm getting the PS3. There is no arguing about it. But since she has mentioned that a wii would be a lot of fun I'd like to be able to also show her that the PS3 can be fun for her to.

It sounds like some of the chesy games form PSn might allow her to get some use out of the PS3.

Why not get both? That's what I did.

PS3 -> BluRay, Next Generation Gaming
Wii -> Unique controller, Party and Casual Gaming

I know a lot of people pooh pooh the Wii-Mote but I think it's awesome. I wish the PS3 could get something similar. Once you play tennis, golf, bowling, or baseball with the Wii-Mote the thought of using a gamepad with analog stick with these types of games is very unappealing.
