I want a new bike

I want to get a new motorcycle this spring, but I'm curious as to what you guys all think is the best kind? My friend and I shared a 500cc katana a while back, but now that one is gone. He sold it without asking me! I wanted to get myself a little toy for myself and my brother, maybe just a 250cc (because I'm short at 5'6.5''). It doesn't have to go 150mph, it just needs to get to 70-80 and have a good acceleration.

Yes I want a crotch rocket
Yes it shouldn't be too expensive (I don't really want a new bike)
higher than 250cc is good, but only if it's not much more money

Used bikes are just fine, I'm just wondering what you guys think before I spend 1000-1400 dollars on a bike... :)

Thank you!

I want a new bike too, but I'm holding off for 1 or 2 more years.
My old Raleigh M60 has been so good to me. I passed up the local bike store's sale last weekend... tempting, but....

I had an EX-500 which is a Ninja 500 before they called them Ninjas. It was a great bike. Looked like a fullsize 600 but weighed less and was fun to ride. I picked up a used one for under $2000 but that was a while ago. I'd definitely check out that model

If you're going to bother with riding one, learn the right term--it's called a sport bike.

Okay, thanks everyone. I know that they're called "sport bikes" technically, but what's wrong with "crotch rocket"?

I woke up in a hospital missing 2 days memory, but story is I got up from teh accident, could carry a conversation and even took off my jacket when the paramedics arrived. Concussion, back to work 4 days from accident.

meh....I don't find sport bikes as enjoyable as a larger cruiser, and tbh, I don't find them to be that much faster. I smoked a Ninja back when I had my old 'zuke.

I would say look for a late 80's Suzuki GS series bike, they are damn near bulletproof. I have owned 3, and loved all three. The 650 was a frickin kick in the pants (that bike flat out moved up till about 100, then it took a bit to get ~120ish, where it pretty well maxed out). The GS1000 was a nice bike to ride all over, and was big enough to travel on. The 750 had some electrical issues that I never finished working through when I sold it (moving from a house to an apt with no room to have a bike in pieces).

not sure whats in the $1000-1400 range, or what type of ridin you plan to do... but wear your gear, thats step# 1. Jacket, pants, gloves, boots, and helmet...If you can't afford quality gear you can't afford to ride. ($1000 in gear alone is easy to do)

Now that we have that out of the way...My personal bike is a YZF600R, its my first bike > 50cc. and i've had it about a year...its awesome fun :)

Don't worry about me getting gear, I can't wait to have an excuse to wear a helmet and some guards!

Seeing "John Doe" written on your helmet must make you feel all warm and fuzzy, huh?

Well, the ninja 250/500 IS a pretty solid bike that's easy to ride.

Might want to look at the SV650, too. The engine's really smooth, though being a V-twin it isn't quite as peaky as most of the inline engines in other sport bikes.

Or you could just go all-out and get a Hayabusa.:p

Hank Doe actually, which is now my nickname around the office.

Apparently during one of my ramblings before I fully regained consciosness, I asked them why I was hank Doe and whether I didn't ahve my wallet and stuff on me. They said everyone admitted through the ambulance was given a doe name. Or something, I don't quite remember that conversation. :p Seems dream like

just a helmet isn't gear ;) What good is a pretty face if you have no skin? I'm just anal about wearing gear, and i'm sure kelvrick was glad he had his on!

I'd really take a look at the YZF600r, i looked at F4i's F4's, and ninja's and determined it was the best bike for me.

but I'd like to see you throw around those 900 pound monstrosity through some twisties.

Most of the fun in sports bikes is in there ability to turn and maneuver not their speed in a straight line.

I wouldn't call a 250cc a "sport bike" by any stretch of the words. :p
