I want a Honda CBR600, but I've never ridden a motorcycle before.

So, what's a good bike for a beginner to get? Maybe a 250cc bike that's old and therefore cheap. Any recommendations?

If I can get a cheap bike and learn to ride it and enjoy it, maybe I can trade it in for the CBR600 next year or something. :)

Get yourself a Ninja 250. Although they're a little more rare a FZR (I belive it is) 400 would also be decent. A Katana 600 wouldn't be that bad for a beginer either. The point is there are quite a few good bikes out there for beginers.

Go to www.sportbikes.net and read up a bit and ask questions. Get yourself some good gear (jeans and sneakers do not count). Probably a good idea to take the msf course also. Over all, be careful. And welcome to the wonderful world of riding :)

Edit: Forgot to mention. Get yourself something you don't care if you screw up because you will dump it at least once. Might want to look into a naked bike (no fairings) like a GS 500 so that way you won't have any plastic to replace (and it is spendy) when you dump it.

1st mod, carbon fiber muffler :D

But seriously, are bikes that dangerous? I'm thinking about getting into them.

Bikes aren't dangerous (if you ride safely and responsibly). Idiots in cars are very dangerous though.

Well, that's the kind of sh*t that scares the crap out of me. I was at an MB test drive event and the guy was like, "we've been to 15 different cities and LA is the only one where people have been hitting signs and light poles" :Q Those are the people I share the roads with.

I'll probably get it just for weekend cruising and stuff though so that cuts down on the risk a bit.

The first reply was dead on. Pick up a used ninja 250. Most times you can sell them for whatever you paid for 'em.

Is it true that the ninja 250 has been exactly the same for like 10 years?

Also riders who push their bikes or skills too hard are a danger as well.

Absolutely. That's why I said they aren't dangerous... if you ride safely and responsibly... I figured it would be fairly clear that, conversely, they can be dangerous when not ridden safely and responsibly.

I just felt it was worth repeating. There are many, many idiots our there riding (as well as driving). The best thing you can do as a beginner is to get a smallish bike (a 250 is good) and ride conservatively, and like others have mentioned, take a riding course. You can always upgrade later to a bigger bike.

I don't think I'll ever get into riding them. They ARE more dangerous than cars, just by design.. Just not worth it to myself.

Motorcycle engines, and the things that they can power(besides motorcycles..).. now, that's a whole 'nother thread. :D

Hint::

This + this = :D

I get more satisfaction out of the fact that I built it myself than I do going fast.
