personally i would wait. moving up the res w/ a new gpu will probably mean you need more ram, so this build is going to get expensive fast, especially when you can get 2GB of ddr2 for ~$110 or so

swap over to a budget c2 - 4300/4400, 2GB ddr2 667, pci-e x1950xt and you will be good to go 🙂

Intel's price cuts will be on Sunday, and ATI is supposed to unveil their new gfx chips when? Man, I never thought going budet PCI-E/c2d route...mmm
This will keep me addicted to Hot Deals forum more than ever - and btw, MicroCenter no longer sells AGP X1950 for $170 😀

i think those ati dx10 cards will be out in may.

I think a 6800 GT could handle CS Source at 1680x1050 pretty well. If anything is slowing you down, it's your CPU. In fact, I doubt you would even see much framerate loss when going from 1024 to 1680 with your setup. Source is very CPU dependant.

(1680x1050)/(1024x768)=2.24 times as many pixels.
Do AA and AF require CPU cycles?

btw guys you persuaded me NOT to throw any more $$ into AGP/DDR1 system.

just curious what fps u get in the stress test at both resolutions?
Max my monitor can show is 60 frames per second.

Low settings (I play with these on 1680x1050 - they aren't tweaked, I just set them randomly)

High settings (Recommended by game itself for my system)

Rounded to nearest whole number:

1680x1050:
Low settings: 90 fps
High settings: 70 fps

1024x768:
Low settings: 102 fps
High settings: 99 fps

Also, for 1024x768 test loaded much faster than for 1680x1050.

I think data supports your and someone else's statement that even now, I am CPU limited, with my 6800GT!

However, while playing CS on custom map that is complex and/or poorly optimized, with many players in sight, average fps drops as low as 30!

You'll be bottlenecked in some games while in others you'll see a good boost.

I'd say if you can sell the 6800GT and upgrade for only $100, this will help you out in some games, but not all. Think of it as spending $100 to last you until the fall when you'll pick up Quad Core 2 for $266 from today's $900+ price.

Athlon XP performance with X1950Pro

You also have 3200+ so the bottleneck will be less significant.

Don't sweat the AGP factor too much. You can always eBay the thing when you're done with it, and then you'll just get the market price, and SOMEONE out there will probably still want it.

Thanks for the link! Exactly what I need.
Man, this is tempting, I am calling MC to see if they still have this card for that price ($170 + $14 tax)!
