I want a file server/router

I want to build a file server/router for my home network..i want it to take up very little space, be cheap, and have max uptime....also not macke much noise..pleas list everything i should get..remember VERY LITTLE SPACE

I don't know about reliability, but you could always try getting one of those Book PCs and then installing Windows NT (or Linux, whatever) on it. By reliability, I mean quality of hardware, but I think if it's just sitting there you shouldn't have too many problems with it....

Might be worth investigating. They're about the size of a decent-sized city's phonebook.

I was going to suggest one of those Dell servers that's about the size of two cases side by side and on wheels. We've got a couple at work, I think my boss paid ~$200 for them, and thats with a 8gb RAID array and tape backup.

But you're building it yourself, so I have no suggestions

Well, for a router, you could use a 486 or such. Here's a linkfor a cheap and easy Linux router. For a file server, just build a single processor computer in a mid tower case with RAID 1.

Just get a P200 or something like that and install Linux on it. Or something like FreeSco if you have very specific needs.
