Hi,

i cant find a notebook that fits my needs for under 1400$. Since iam used to build my own desktop comps, i started thinking, if its already possible to build my own notebook - get better performance for less money. Some say its impossible, but i picked out some parts and maybe u can comment what u think bout the building a lappy idea :). Links, Shops..everything is welcome.

2 x 512MB SO-DIMM PC400 CL2.5 (64Mx8) = 45$
CPU K8 MOB64 Turion ML37/ 2.0 GHz/1MB/35W/Tray = 360Euro <-- or the MT-model with 25Watt
Hitachi Travelstar E7K60 60GB (HTE726060M9ATX0/08K0889) = 130$
MSI Megabook Barebone M635 = 650Euro.

total = around 1200$

Sounds to good to be true? Right, this is, becuz although the normal M635 modell comes with X700mobility, the barebook version will only have integrated ATi RS480M which is okay considering it it only onboard graphics, but of course i want to play latest games thus i nedd a X700 mobility or a faster card.

Are there any shops, selling notebook graphic cards?

greetz.

I'm in the US so I can't comment on the availability of that barebone kit you mention, but if it does indeed have a mobo that supports Turion you're good to go. Do you have a link to a website where you can get that barebones kit?

In regards to notebook GPU's, no; for the most part you cannot get modular GPU's yet (definitely not for thin & light machines) because they are all soldered onto the motherboard.

BTW, there is no point in getting 2x512MB sticks of RAM; that will only eat up your slots. You should be able to find a 1Gb stick for around the same price and that will leave a memory slot open.

i seen the MSI M635 in european shops already. http://www.sellya.de/product_info.php/products_id/6058 or http://www.geizhals.at/eu/?fs=megabook&x=0&y=0&in=
MSI showed a prototype at the german Cebit in March. Iam optimistic that it will be available next quarter, hopefully. Though theres still no official link at the MSI website plus i didnt see any american eseller offer these kits too. Not a good sign.

Yes, the GPUs seem all be soldered :( and thats the worst problem i can think of. One exception i found at coboc.com, Clevo N9860, which is ways to huge, a DTR :/
http://www.coboc.com/diy/Config.asp?Section=40107
plus a GEFORCE GO 6800 http://www.coboc.com/diy/Config.asp?Section=50202

and ur right, 1x1024 RAM is better, gonna have to find cheap modules.

The big Q right now is: Will the M635 barebook come with ATI480 onboard graphics or with the nice x700 mobility. I cant say for sure, cuz the online shops dont say wether or not exactly, so I will email them my question. Hopefully the answer will be postive.

Yes, the Clevo is one of the only swappable GPU units. Downside is that different manufacturers use different modular slots for the graphics, so that doesn't even guarantee you will be able to swap the GPU.

You can always call MSI. can't hurt ;)

I dont take the prices for serious since some important parts like the Turion and MSI 635 are not or very hard to get at the moment (only one vendor here in germany...:( ) but it should give an idea of what is possible. Also Its not easy to find internet ressources, or forums where somebody already build his own lappy. I found two short articles though showing its technically not a big deal:
http://www.overclockers.com/tips1195/
http://www20.tomshardware.com/howto/20050504/whitebooks-05.html
the books they build are crap regarding their performance and graphic systems. And THG says it was more expensive to go for a whitebook system but infact it seems to b opposite. Iam not sure, but the rigs above should have lot of performance for the money.
