now that I have the home server in my bedroom, the noise is a bit bothering. I have barely any money to spend on it but I want to be really quiet. speed isn't really much concern, just noise and cost. what are some drives current, or past that fit that description?

maybe something along the lines of a 5400 rpm drive would suit you best. I think maxtor's d540x were pretty quiet but i dont know if the make them anymo'

acanthus, he said cheap. seagate drives are anything but cheap relatively speaking. you hardly ever find a decent deal on them.

Maxtor must've changed their drives in the past couple of years. I had a 40 gb Maxtor 7200 rpm and it was noisy as anything. Click.. Click.. Click! I've been using WD drives almost exclusively since and I can't even tell that they are running.

I can't hear my Maxtor 40 GB 7200 RPM drive at all but it also has liquid bearings so... well yeah I'd say it is quiet

The Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 8 drives are VERY quiet. They are at the bottom of every performance list (well, within 3 or 4th of bottom), and while they are 7200rpm they're extremely quiet. I used to think that my Western Digital 60GB drive which I could still hear a little was quiet (5400rpm) but the Maxtor ones are even quieter!

I currently am using the 6E020L0 or whatever that model number is and its very quiet. I don't hear it at all. Its quieter than my brother Seagate U Series which can with his old computer which is a 5400 rpm. The Maxtor also has liquid bearings which is another reason why its quiet. Again, not much performance which you seem to be fine with, but VERY quiet.

WD 600AB is nice and quiet... untill one of mine overheated one day due to prolonged fan failure in a very cramped case and the bearings of the motor now whiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnneeeeee.

I've got a 5400RPM Maxtor 80g drive in my file server - it's dead quiet as far as I can tell. The PSU makes more noise than the drive.

I second this one. The 40GB Maxtor DM+8 is on sale this week at Best Buy for $29.99 after two rebates. Yes there are bigger drives and better deals, but if you're looking for quiet, and don't or can't afford a Seagate Barracuda IV or V, this one will work well.

I'm using one of these, it is very quiet. Not as quiet as my 'Cuda IV but then again what is? :)
