I think I would be riding on asphalt mostly, but I might also want to do some trail riding.

Is there a cross between a road bike and a mountin bike?

I am looking to spend $300 or so...

Anyone have any suggestions?

I would probably rather buy a used bike from a bike shop or newspaper or something.

What is the term or kind of bike that I am looking for? The only bikes I know anything about are freestyle and BMX.

Hybrid. Should be in your price range and can handle both pavement and light trail use. :)

Hmmm....
Yep. It's basically a light-duty mountain bike with 700c rims and semi-slick tires rather than 26" knobbies.

Yup - and hybrids have a more comfortable vertical riding posture, vs. a mountain bike with a very horizontal posture.

well this is more than $300, but here is a good example of something between a roadie and a ATB.

85% roadie, 15% ATB: LeMond's Wayzata

Howdy!

You sound like you are looking for EXACTLY what I was a few months ago!!!!!! I wanted a bike that was easy to ride, comfy, a good ride on asphalt, and would not be helpless in minor off-road places (campgrounds/light trails). My budget was $300 too! :)

Here is what i ended up with:

Raleigh SC40

My wife and I each got one.

Here is pic of MY actual bike

It really is a joy to ride and it did not break the bank ;) I relied heavily on advice from some of the "Bike Gurus" here (Fauso, Brutuskend, etc...) I'll link to some threads where this was discussed if you like.

BTW, the purchase price was $309 at my local bike shop

I have a road bike that I've ridden for 15 years. I got a mtn bike this spring and it's a freakin B L A S T!!!

I ride in a swampy area for now but it's so fun I wish I'd done it years and years ago. I recommend a giant Yukon or similar. I paid about $5 bills for it and you will need to add some pedals and shoes so another $100.

Don't get the hybrid, you are pretty limited with that. Go for dirt and trails!!!

I got a mtn bike and a set of slick tires for the road. I put on the knobbies when I go mtn biking, and the slicks for commuting.

I can't be the only one who thinks a suspension fork on a bike for asphalt and light trail use is kinda stupid. It doesn't provide any reall benefit in those conditions, and it soaks up energy when you pedal that should go into accelerating the bike.
