I wanna upgrade my moms Direct TV

Heres the problem, my uncle got 4 units to take care of his buddies in Canada. He gave her the leftover one. He pays the bills but the checks are mailed from America. The service is basic SD with relatively few channels. I got her an HDTV last Xmas and she's been watching shows in grainy SD for better part of a year now.
The unit is crap. Goes down all the time, takes forever to update (and the last batch of updates had serious technical issues, keeping her off service for a week or so), has frequent audio or video loss, sometimes both. And it just plain stinks.
I would like to upgrade just her unit to HD (keeping the old one around for back up or turning in) but I dont think I can swing my uncle on paying for HD service for all 4 units and I'm pretty darn sure we all need the exact same service.
Is there a better unit I can buy thats an improvement over the cheap, used old SD models they keep refurbishing and sending to customers?

This can wait until Christmas, in fact thats probably ideal.

For those suggesting Roku, she already has one. Never uses it. Complains theres nothing on. Which is funny cuz the sattelite only has about 30 channels with actual stuff on them and she doesnt like most of it anyways.

upgrading hardware without upgrading the programming is a waste of time. for example, you buy a HD Direct TV box, authorise with Direct TV, but you will still only get SD programming only unless you subscribe to HD package.

Talk to the buddies in Canada, have them chip in and all go HD.

PS never hook it up to network or phone.

She would also need an HD dish. Directv goes to uncles house to install upgrades and wants to know where the hell are all the receivers on your account.

Tell them you'll do a self install. I doubt they will require a technician to visit. They're all contractors anyway and could probably care less if you're playing by the rules or not.

You won't be able to get an HD dish from DirecTV without a technician stopping by.

Ah, yes you can. you may have to pay for it out of pocket though. There's always ebay or craigslist if you can't find one in a store that sells satellite stuff.

They way they encourage you to leave those things around, they are all over the place. The last place i rented had two in the yard and one in the storage barn for some reason.

Yeah, I doubt a used one would cost very much anyway. If I was getting DTV I would self install. I don't trust cable/sat installers to do a good job.
