It kinda depends on your usage. I'm mostly happy with my P4P800, 1.5G PC3500, 3.0C and X850; it even runs the native rez of my panel (1080p) for modern games. Sure, I don't get the full effect, but it'll hold until next year and I'll get the latest/greatest and a DX10 card.

You really can't beat yourself up for not having the cutting-edge, especially because this market is so unforgiving. 33 days after I upgraded to a 7800 GT, the 7900 came out.

I'm jealous of all you guys, I am still on a 730mgz P3 with 128megs of RAM, and a Nvidia 5200 upgrade from Wal-Mart. I can still play some games at low resolution with some bad screen lag at times. I have it finely tuned though (I keep a bare miminum on the hardrive, rarely have over 16 processes running, that type of thing) so it doesn't feel a lot different from other computers I use at work etc.

I think I have you all beat (though I wish I hadn't). My primary machine is a AMD Duron 950, 512MB, TNT2 32MB. Yeah, an upgrade would be nice and I can afford one (heck, $100 could double the power of this machine), but I haven't found much need for it yet. Yet.

EDIT: D'oh. I guess I don't have you all beat.

I'm still using my P4-M 1.7ghz four year old laptop. No real reason to upgrade to anything new IMO. I'll probably use this one till it dies.

I'm not big on upgrades. Last year and a half ago I got a AMD3000 with a gig of ram and I can't complain (except that it needs a reformat). Before that I had the same Duron 700/256mb for a bit over 5 years.

This T42 Centrino 735 with Fingerprint, SXGA+, 1GB 2700 is going to last me until 2008 when the warranty expires.

That's what I thought with that exact same chip.

The move to an E6400 (and I did it on the cheap with an ASRock-775Dual board) was a bit of a mindblower.

It is really that much faster. It pretty much doubled my COD2, HL2, and Q4 FPS's and truly saves me hours on all the encoding I do.

I've been in this computer game for years and years and I can't remember gettting a smile like this for under $300 for a long time. It's cool to hang onto old good stuff that works but to ignore major leaps in progress that can be acheived cheaply is simply being uber-cheap. :p

Did that $300 include a new video card and ram? Because if I upgraded my processor I would have to upgrade my motherboard. And since it uses AGP and DDR ram I would also have to upgrade to a PCI-e video card and DDR2 ram. Doesn't seem worth it to me, especially since I already have 2GB of DDR400.

Quite simple really if you don't need a new PC, don't upgrade. My P4 3.0C@3.4 and 6800GT@ultra do everything I need them to. Sure, it's a little slow to run games in 1920x1200, but it's acceptable so there is no reason to upgrade. I hope to stay with my current rig for another year, maybe a little longer, hopefully by that time nvidia/ati will put out new videocards that are not as powerhungry as 8800...

Man... why are people on a forum full of computer geeks wanting a reason to upgrade! Aren't we supposed to want to upgrade for no reason, just because we like to play with and tweak computers?!?

:p

I did upgrade the video card last year, but the main part of the computer is from 2003. But since it runs my games at 1680x1050, I dont really have a reason to upgrade it now. I think this is the longest that a computer has lasted without being obsolete

i still have a pentium pro 225mhz in AT case (atx). beat that.

u dont need top upgrade cpu. games are just video card intensive. if it says pentium 4, you're fine. (celeron is a diff story.)

Well it's great to be able to buy a system and no it won't be outdated in 18 months. Of course all of that could change when MyDickisSoft releases Vista.

He used an ASRock 775Dual board. It has APG, PEG 4x, DDR and DDR2.
