i've seen that in other forums using Fuse Talk - the number of times people have "read" (or at least clicked on) that particular thread. i think its interesting to know not only how many people reply to a thread, but also how many are simply observing from afar.

It slows down the forums too much (we've tried that before) - I mean, we have over 60,000 registered members not to mention a ton of people who aren't registered who browse the forums - that'll take down anything on any type of connection. It might be ok for a small UBB but not one of this size.

yep, RB is right...

See, if we enabled them, then everyone would crab that the forums were too slow, and zuni would be going (oh no, I think we're going to experience some breakage...)

I remember when they were tried before and I liked them. I understand the system strain, but maybe its time for a server upgrade to take placae. I really did like the feature and would like to see it in place again.

If you read through Anand's articles on his forum configs you'll see he's upgraded them at least twice this year already. And the servers are already powerful enough that there isnt much you can add that is going to dramatically increase performance.
At least not wihile maintaining any semblance of a budget.....which isnt to say that Anandtech's server budget isnt already extremely high.

It just isnt realistically a viable option.
