I wanna get a new cell phone, what's a good way to get it cheap?

I heard that if you call your current company and ask to upgrade phones you can get a good deal. I'm with VoiceStream/T-Mobile BTW. I wanna switch to from my old nokia to a sidekick. I'm on the family plan right now though, and for the sidekick internet, e-mail and stuff I have to add $20 to my plan. Do you guys know if I can add that to a family plan? I would call and ask right now but the phone contract isn't under my name, it's under my sisters and she's not home. So anyone got any suggestions on how to get the phone?
