So here is my sleeping schedule right now:

Go to sleep at 3AM and wake up at 3PM. It's horrible!

So I want to DRASTICALLY change that. I want to go to sleep before midnight and wake up at 8AM. I can't do it by myself, so here is the question; What is the best sleep aid that I can take daily and be safe?

Yeah, my job requires me to work between 4PM and 10PM. Sometimes 1PM to 8PM.

Dude, TRUST ME DO IT NATURAL.

Yeah becoming reliant on something to help you sleep is generally a bad idea :(

That's what I heard, that's why I was asking if there is anything out there I can take for a week or two to get into the swing of things.

Umm, actually what I would suggest is to try to either pull an all-nighter or set your alarm to 8AM (regardless of when you fall asleep). If you're tired enough you'll be able to fall asleep relatively early.

I took benedryl to go to bed, same thing in tylenol pm, or unisom. Just take it 45 mins - an hour before you want to go to bed. After time is up and you are laying down, you should sleep quickly and deeply. Set your alarm for the time you want to get up and it shouldn't be a problem. You may experience some grogginess but after a week or so you should be on the schedule and able to drop the pills.

To ween yourself off the schedule aim for an hour earlier every day. So first day take the pills (50MG of diphenhydramine HCl) at 1am. Then midnight and so on. You can work yourself down every day so it's not such a shock to your system. Once you are regulated, stop with the pills.

6-7 hours? That's nothing. When you work 12 hour shifts and you are switching between 6am-6pm and 6pm-6am, come talk to me then.

Yeah I don't think any amount of work during the day would cause me to sleep for 12 straight hours...

I consider myself lucky if I get 5-6.

Yeah, a quick-reset should do the trick.

Wake up at 3pm, and stay awake until the next day at maybe 11pm or midnight, and go to bed then. Set alarm for 8am. You might feel groggy that day, but after another day or two, you should be "an early riser."

It takes time (months) to retrain your sleep schedule.

Just force yourself to go to bed earlier. And sleeping half your life away is no way to live.

Melatonin...all natural....your body already makes it and it's natural purpose is to regulate your sleep cycle. Traveling from the east coast->west I can usually get used to the time change in 2 days when I take it. Take 3mg before bed at the same time *everynight*. Might not hurt to get drunk early the first night to help you pass out, just be sure to set an alarm and actually get up when it goes off.

You fool. You need no pills.

Skip one night of sleeping then fall asleep next day at 10pm. Your sleeping pattern will be fixed to 10-7am in no time.

listen to the man. a fiend of mine worked in the sheriffs department pulling those hours. he said the job and money wasn't bad, but the hours he just could *not* take.

I used to have this problem - it was seriously wrecking my life. I was tired all the time but somehow stayed up until 3AM. I would oversleep, miss work, perform poorly at work, be bitchy most of the time - also I ended up with some serious health problems.

This is how I "fixed" myself.

1.) Changed my work time to 7AM-4PM. I basically required myself to be awake early and during the day to live and pay the bills.

2.) I removed all distractions from where I slept, including TV, stereo, computer, cell phone, books etc. When I went to bed it was instant lights out - no chatting with the wife or anything else.

3.) I stopped eating after 6:00PM. If I HAD to have something I went for a glass of red wine and some popcorn with no butter/salt. NO sugar, no caffeine, no carbohydrates. Your body needs to be winding down by around 9:00PM. Without any extra energy I was getting sleepy by 8:30PM.

4.) I set every alarm in the house to go off at 9:00PM - this way I had to get up and go turn them off - which made me stop whatever I was doing. I then went into my bedroom and got right into bed, lights out. Generally I was able to fall asleep by 10:00PM after a few weeks. After a few months I was asleep by 9:15PM once my body got used to it.

5.) I set all my house alarms for 5:30AM - even ones on the other side of the house which forced me to get up and turn them off.

6.) Eat a big breakfast and start your day quickly - don't piddle around, go jogging if you need to. The sooner you start the sooner your body is burning off energy - you need to be running on empty when it's time for bed or you will never fall asleep!

This worked for me and I am a changed man because of it! A few nights a week I stay up late if I am working from home (I work IT and sometimes work late like tonight to upgrade systems when everyone is offline).

Good luck! You can do it!

All great ideas to reinforce going to bed. My bedroom is for sleeping and shagging. That's it.

Here's my tactice that I'm employing right now....

"time for bed"
"time for bed"
"go to bed"
"time for bed"
"go to bed"

hahaha, so silly you all are to think that this is something that can be reversed/accomplished in days. It takes weeks/months to greatly modify the circadian cycle
