I upgraded to 24 gb of ram... What cool things can I do with it?

Open a spreadsheet and fill every cell of a worksheet with some junk data, such as a "1". Then make copies of that worksheet over and over until you fill your RAM.

Create a RAM drive, then create a virtual machine with the virtual hard drive on the RAM drive. Put an .iso of your operating system's install CD/DVD on the RAM drive. Then see how fast your OS installs and boots in the VM.

waste of money as best you can do is post on forum about it 😀

Well, if you must know... I picked up the 16 gb Corsair DDR3 that was a shell shocker the other day for another build I'm doing in a little bit. So, until then... I'm throwing 3 of the sticks in my system to go up to 24 GB because I can, at least until I get the other system.

If you have a fast, multicore CPU and the patience to get the freeware/open sourceware Blender (www.blender.org) and luxrender (www.luxrender.net) up and running, they eat RAM for breakfast and make a pretty cool "computer toy" even if you never figure out most of what they can do. Takes a little while to get everything installed and working together, though...

I bough 16GB from the last weeks shell shocker, the increase in the pagefile.sys almost took up my entire OS drive (partitioned SSD) so I had to take 2 sticks out... I never used more than 3.3 GB of memory anyways... But I am thinking about ramdrive and also look at FancyCache, looks interesting!

If you have that much RAM, you could always disable your page file or manually set it at a value.

Yep! I've never had a page file that big. If you keep the case open, you may be able to cut down on your heating bill this winter. 🙂

oh, I didnt know you could do that! If disabling is an option I would definitely like to do that. Will do some research... thanks!

There are supposedly some programs that will crash with it disabled, when I went from 4 GB to 12 GB, I limited windows virtual mem to 1 GB, I think.

I tried Fancycache. Big difference in performance with 6GB on Fancycache if I turned on delayed writes, but you risk some corruption if, say, your system crashes while delaying a write. Didn't see as big a performance benefit if I didn't enable that option. Given they are likely to come up with a final version soon (and thus it will cost money) I probably won't use it long term.

I run without a page file and only have 12gigs of ram. Heh only 🙂

There aren't any. But disabling the page file does prevent crash dumps in the event of a BSOD. But most people don't know how to analyze and debug using a dump, so that's effectively moot.

big ramdisk for your porn collection.

But then I'd lose it everytime I shut down!!!

OP: The coolest thing you can do with it is build 3 systems. 😀

Heh, that's actually what's going to happen. I'm going to be building a second system with it, I just haven't gotten the second system yet. I'm not entirely sure what I want to build (wait for 2011 to mature a bit and build a 2011 system to replace my 1366, or upgrade my second system to 1155 from AMD DDR2 based system).
