I updated my list. I originally thought I had done my homework, but thanks to you guys I realize I kind of had the right idea but was geared more towards SLI and too many bells and whistles. What I?m really looking for is a fairly basic yet solid gaming PC. What do you all think of the new setup? If you feel I have more homework to do, please be nice about it.:)

Case: Gigabyte Triton 180 Black - a lot less $ and fits the measurements I need. The side-panel CPU cone is removable.

CPU: Q6600 (GO Stepping preferably) - chose the Q6600 for future-proofing, and I understand it overclocks well; which is something I will be doing.

CPU Cooler: Tuniq Tower 120 - that should cover any OCing I do and then some. Better safe than sorry, decent price.

MOBO: ASUS P5K Deluxe - many people recommended P5K. After reading lots of reviews, tests, and experiences I think this board is the way to go for OCing.

RAM: Corsair XMS2 2x1GB PC6400C4DHX - should give me enough OCing head room.

GPU: 8800 GTX 768MB - was able to save myself almost $1k from last setup so I put it towards the GPU. Not sure if it?s a little overkill though with the 19? 1440x900. I?m hoping it wouldn?t bottleneck with not enough to do. AA and AF are important to me though. I?m big on graphics.

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 32MB Cache ? what?s the deal with only OEM availability?

PSU: Corsair CMPSU-550VX - per GTX requirements and the fact that I would rather try a single rail PSU and price reasonable.

Optical: Lite-On DVD Burner SATA LH-20A1S

OS: Windows Vista home Premium 32 Bit Retail Version

Nice list, but it leaves me wondering. Since intel and nvidia are soon to release a new lineup, why not wait till then and see what else comes up.

Q6600 is just a waste of money for gaming. Most games don't take advantage of quad core, and by the time they do, to the point where it's very advantageous over dual cores, it's likely you'll upgrade again by then anyway. Go for an E8400, they OC like a beast from the reviews I've read.

2x2GB DDR2 800 memory is the way to go, and get a copy of Vista 64 bit.

Iunno if 8800 GTX is still worth it. The 8800 GT or 8800 GTS 512 should be suffice at 1440x900 with some AA. New cards are coming up from nVidia in a few months, so who knows what'll happen.

I agree with Chinaman about the quad-core processor, but at the end of the day that's up to you.

At any rate, if you're going to go quad-core for future-proofing, you may as well also get 4GB of RAM. It's very affordable right now.

As far as the 8800GTX, I wouldn't spend the money on it right now. Nvidia's new graphics cards should be out relatively soon. At your resolution I don't think you're going to be maxing the card out anyway. I'd go with an 8800GTS 512 if you really want something a little peppier than the 8800GT. It's as good at the GTX in some games.

You sure about the case ? For that money you can get a coolermaster 690cm too, or a centurion 5, or this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...2E16811129025&Tpk=p182 my personal favorite. The p5k deluxe is nice, but do you need everything on it, like firewire, esata etc ? Could go with a gigabyte ds3l for 90$, less then half the money. Drop the GTX, since the GTX is only better then much cheaper 8800GT or 8800GTS at higher resolutions with a lot of AA, and you won't be running at such a high resolution. 2x2gb is adviced like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231122 for example. And get the 64 bit version, that would be all, hehe.

I'm still trying to figure out what real world benefits I'd gain from Vista 64 2x2GB vs. Vista 32 2x1GB? Is the drivers situation a thing of the past?
