(Sorry if my English is a kind of strange, I am not speaking English on a daily basis.)

I,ve got my hands on a defect P III 550, and wonder if any of you could help me get this CPU running again.
(I planning to use it in a small server where it is going to replace an older DUAL P200MMX) (on a diffrent board of course.....🙂)

The problem is that somebody have dismantled the CPU with the folloving consecuences:

Pin 70 on the chip place on the back of the CPU is missing, but this I think i could fix (I work with soldering small things daily (repairing cellular phones).

The second defect is that there is missing a (not so small) capasitor named C47 on the back of the CPU, and i dont know the value of this.....

Anybody ???

and......I think...
it's going to work when i have soldered the chip, and replaced the capasitor, course it POST's at current state, but it hangs when it starts too read on the HD....

Thx. in advance.....

Interesting post. Why would someone dismantle a CPU? It sounds more to me like it got crushed or smashed on purpose. How do you know it's a capacitor and not a resistor? Soldering a CPU pin...that sounds very difficult.

Good luck to you.

If I'm not mistaken, a resistor would be "R47" whereas a capacitor would be "C47." Wish I had one layin around, then I would check for ya. Good luck!

I think they have damaged this CPU removing the original fan, too put on something bigger/ better. I really dont know why, but i can see what missing on the CPU, and small scratches on the board (this is a Slot1 CPU...)

No, I cant return the CPU, but i didn't pay much for it.... it came together with some other stuff i bought used, and i kind of get this for (allmost) nothing at all..... and i think it would be worth it if i just find out the value on C47......

i dont know much about this, but i doubt you can just solder a cpu pin, the signal have to be very clear. good luck though 🙂

Now it's working like a "new" CPU !!!!!
I soldered pin 70 under a microscope (32X....), and mounted a new capacitor (C47), and there it was, working perfectly.......

Am I good ?, or am I good ????

Wow, you did this w/a regular soldering iron? Do you do neurosurgery as well? 😉 Congrats; that is quite an accomplishment you have under your belt. Two thumbs-up! 😎
