I tried the pencil trick...It will let me change to 12x but no difference..

use an eraser. here's a tutorial on the loctite technique.

A good wipe should do it. BTW, you might want to try to find thin masking - like .5mm pinstriping tape - to make it easier.

I'm gonna do that next time, instead of making the mess I did (but it worked anyway).
