I tried Sushi last night

foghorn67

Lifer
With the exception of a few, I don't like seafood.
So for the first time, I tried sushi.

My mistake, I still don't like seafood. To be honest, there is a texture in there that makes me want to gag. Not really the taste, but the texture.

I don't like it either despite trying it a few times. Actually, I like the taste, but the urge to gag that surely follows always ruins any enjoyment from it.
But then I do have allergy to some seafood so maybe it's not a purely psychological response.

Starting from a negative point is never a good way to try things for the first time.
What did you have?
There are some I cannot stand and as such, stick to more conventional ones and don't usually stray.

Although, that being said, when at a Company dinner, one eats a little of EVERYTHING , lest one offend the host. This is the rule in Japan, and translates well across the pond.

if you're eating good sushi the texture should be quite delicate and it pretty much melts in your mouth

My pre-dispositions never interfere with my taste.

Right. Unless you're eating shit sushi which seems to be the norm for most places. Fortunately, there are several really good sushi places around here! Yay fish!

I like shrimp/scallops/crabmeat.
I like lobster tail.
I like fillet of any fish.
I do not like crawfish.
I do not like crab legs.
I do not like the whole lobster.
I do not like the whole damn fish/crustaceon staring at me.
I do not like green eggs and ham (I had to throw that in to derail the fools).

And no; I don't like sushi either. I've had all kinds of sushi from frozen do it yourself kits to the $100 a plate places in Manhattan. Guess what? It all tastes the same. It's all raw fish/fish products wrapped in seaweed or some funky Mughwai Monkey Mosse Wrap...whatever. To me, it's nasty, and I LIKE seafood (as detailed above)

I understand you, foghorn67. Contrary to what the majority here will tell you, you ARE COOL and can be POPULAR even though you don't like sushi. Heck, you can join my club; they told me the same BS when I said I didn't like Sushi. It's like, worshipping Satan AND Bush around here if you say you don't like Sushi.

I buy $5 grocery sushi and it is still amazing.

My friend says the same thing about the texture of certain fish, he just can't eat it. I don't mind the texture at all, it's just the taste of certain fish that I don't like. I do love pigging out on sushi though, so delicious.

You like certain seafood. Mostly cooked seafood. That's fine. Very few people love sushi the first time.

I love pretty much all seafood, raw or cooked. I'm one of those people who will go fishing on a boat and catch a fish and fillet the fish while it's alive and eat it raw on the spot while on the boat. There's nothing better than eating raw fish right on the boat.

Sushi may be hip but the real fish lover eat sashimi. It doesn't get any better than catching your own in the ocean and eating it on the spot.

Try the yellowtail. I'm no fan of seafood either, the texture makes me gag but there's no fishy taste and if it's fresh, it should just melt in your mouth as someone else stated.

I found myself in an experimental mood a couple weeks ago and tried a few things and to my own surprise I found to have really liked some seafood.

You also think $2/lb select steak from Jewel-Osco is amazing.

lol. If it's alive and comes out of the water, I will find a way to eat it. Don't understand you people, but to each their own. 😛

 Gollum, is that YOU? :Q Your assessment of my seafood preferences is correct...I know I'm a bit limited in my tastes, but they seem safe (and taste much better!) to me. 🙂

I've had limited experience with sushi, and so far like tuna in terms of raw fish. I can tolerate white meat fish. I do not like the taste and texture of salmon at all.

The then the mucus looking fermented soybeans i saw on, "A Cooks Tour" i don't think any type of texture would completely turn me off a food.

Keep with the cooked rolls 🙂

Yellow tail is by far my favorite type of sushi (sashimi too). The more expensive tuna (they've got two different Japanese names) is a close 2nd.

I'm really fond of sushi! I think my favourite one is tuna fish 😛
I had a bias against sushi before I tried it for the first time, but I was wrong. It was funny because I didn't know about wasabi and when I saw it I thought it was made of peas, so I got a spoonful of it... it was so disgusting!

amazing? Chances are any grocery tuna is not going to be fresh enough for good sushi. What are you going with, California Rolls?
