I have always wanted to try making a stained glass piece.
My great uncle makes large windows for churches, and I watched him solder some pieces together when I was a kid.

This weekend, I got some supplies from a local store and found a pattern.

The glass cutting isn't as hard as people make it sound, and if you can solder electronics well, soldering stained glass is simple.

I first made a tiny box to hold a rag drenched in oil (to lubricate the glass cutter).

So really, the pics are of my second project, even if my first project was only 8 joints.

In the world of stained glass, it's tough to find a "manly" pattern, but I thought this dragon looked pretty cool.

Workbench
All of the pieces cut out
Scrap and screw ups
Laid out
Copper foil applied
All flat-soldered together
Done, after bead soldered (fattened up the joints)

This was a starter to learn the trade enough to make a window.
I guess I will give this to my nephew.
Hopefully he doesn't try to eat it.

Anyone else try stained glass?
I found it to be pretty enjoyable, even if it slightly effeminate :)

I always wanted to try it!!
I am told though that once you get heavily into it you will need an area completely away from anything due to all the minute glass particles and such!!

Looks real good your first project!!!

Very nice :) Congrats on your first piece.

I've done tons of stuff like wood burning, furniture making, painting, drawing etc.... even jewelry making but stained glass is one I have not tried yet. In my new townhome there's a half circle arch like window in the front door. I've toyed with the idea of making a piece to fit over that.

Your thread is an inspiration. :) Thanks for sharing!

Guestimating based upon the quality of your first work, it looks like you have the patience and the steadiness of hand in order to do some very nice stained glass artwork.

My grandfather has done stained glass hobby work for over 60 years. He's done lamps, windows, churches, and just about every miniature imaginable.

I could never get into the hobby myself, but it is a very impressive art form.

I'm starting to learn that...
If you walked bare-foot in my garage right now, you would probably be leaving bloody footprints.
I am probably tracking all kinds of glass shards into my house... :(

while you dont need to make it far away, it ha to take into account the amount of glass lying around... my stepmom has done some very cool stained glass, the most public one being a partition from the entry to the bar at a restaurant on mill ave in tempe. 6'X6' it is huge. i like the dragon. my step mom never really let me and my bro make stuff out of glass, but she was very into trying to help me with silk screening.

was there a website or something that got you started? I think it would be cool to make a box and put some stained glass on it, of course light wouldn't shine through it and be all cool but it would still look nice I think.

my stepmom used a sanding table to cut her glass on. it has a vacuum attached at one end and a grating on top of it. its originally designed for sanding parts that will be painted. it sucks the glass particles down as she cuts, that way there isnt too much left to fly into eyes or on the floor. her work area is in the garage also, right next to the door to the kitchen.

I too have wanted to try working with stained glass.

Can I ask just how much it cost you to get started?

very nice. That would look really cool if you set it in concrete and put it in a garden or something.

Very nice, good job. I love Stained Glass. The most beautiful stained glass I've ever seen, is Tiffany Stained glass. Do a google image search, it's breath taking. Absolutely beautiful in person. I went to a Tiffany exhibit last year, and saw first hand, some of his stained glass panels and windows. It's eye candy, the depth, color on top of color. I just stood there in awe. Stained glass is wonderful, the way the light hits it, the possibilities are endless. Again, good job! Keep up the good work!
