It was really nice, I like this size a lot better than i thought and the screen was gorgeous. My only complaint in the short time I handled it was it seemed not smooth when scrolling from pages(home screens etc) like a slight stutter or delay. This was at Best Buy and they also had a no name generic ass Android tablet next to it, what a POS that thing was

i wish samsung would hurry up and put out a wi-fi only galaxy tab. i don't want, or need, to pay a premium for 3g service anywhere.

Could buy a Viewsonic GTablet now and slap Cyanogen on it? :p Costs less than the contract-free Galaxy Tabs. Should be plenty of WiFi tablets out in 2011 though, my Wits A81E has been fun to play with. But the lack of kernel source from China has stymied it a lot.

The GTablet is a pretty big step down in display quality though since it has a rather poor TN panel vs the IPS display on the Galaxy Tab.

well from teh review the viewsonic pretty nifty and is less than $400 for 10 inch tablet. very tempted to order but i want a 10inch with g3/g4... only huge negative is that it sounds like flash doesn't work well on it.

Then again in the next 4 months or so the market is going to be flooded with these things...

I went to the local Best Buy Mobile store at the mall. Played with a lot of Android devices and was impressed by many. Overall my favorite was the Dell Streak. I prefer something I could keep in a pocket. Anything larger and I need a bag, so I'd rather have a proper laptop.

I'm tempted to go around (maybe to the Samsung showcase at Columbus Circle), download & run a root app on each Tab, and set the browser home page to XDA.

Viewsonic is a bit of a joke: looks like for high-end screen quality you need to pay iPad/Tab prices.

Might want to throw the nook color into this mix. I hear it can be hacked and you have a sweet little android device for $250. I recently picked up a deal on the original nook from ebay for $79 and I really love it. I like it better than my wife's kindle 3.

i think it's as good as the iPad, and has sold well since it was released. next year will be the tablet bonanza though. RIM's model looks another serious rival to Jobs' and co. lol

You're exactly right.
It just not as smooth as the ipad.
I love the 7" form factor though.
I'll wait for the Acer with Tegra2 and 1280x800 display.
Haven't seen any future tablets that has comparable specs.
We all know the ipad2 will rock but I don't like the 9" form factor.

Flash prevents a smooth OS, this is Steve Jobs peeve with Adobe, i have an iPad which the OS is smooth and creates a great user experience. I don't miss Flash, and if i needed Flash for some reason i would refer to my Laptop.

I think the thought of not having Flash is more of a concern than actually needing it. Of course if you rely on Flash for some reason then the iPad is not for you.

After returning my Galaxy i found that a 10 inch is as small as a tablet should be for over an all viewing experience eg... games, photo, internet, reading, and composing letters/emails. JMO

Waiting for the Motorola tablet. Looks interesting will have to see how the screen holds up etc blah blah. But if they can come out with something as "next step forward" as the Droid/Android 2.0 was, they could be doing good. Better put some brown sugar on the thing though.

Flash doesn't prevent a smooth OS, lol?? It may make the browser stutter a bit if it's a heavy load but I never see most flash items anyway with the on-demand plugin setting enabled in the browser.

oh yeah... the browser isn't part of the Operating System... like an engine isn't part of a car.

What are you babbling about? The browser is just as quick and the same if you toggle to enable on demand in the browser setting. If you want to use flash, you tap area where you would see adobe? symbol on the webpage. Then flash content loads. How is this not a positive and useful feature? It doesnt slow your browsing experience onebit and you get to use flash content whenever you want. It's win-win.

As for flash not being useful, maybe for you. I use flash often to stream live NFL and NBA games to my phone. NFL redzone on Sunday. Firstrow.net, adthe.net, and myp2p.eu are my first three bookmarked pages on my phone web browser. My wife watches Korean dramas and shows on her phone often too. Flash is the biggest thing we miss on our iPad.

your gaggle is incorrect... first of all i said, if.. Flash is important to you or anyone who relies on it, then the iPad is not for you/them, because it doesn't have fLASH. Flash is also part of the platform developers use for Apps which does not want to be part of their OS. There's more to it than turn it on or off when you choose, its integrated and part of the overall OS... beyond watching Korean dramas or NFL red zone/NBA.

here read...

Operating System (OS) a system is many parts to perform a task...NO???

To have an overall smoother user friendly OS, the iPad does not have FLASH.

reliability, security and performance.

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

What are you talking about? Flash is just a plug-in for the browser. Its not written into the operating system. Android applications are written in java. And your quoting Steve Jobs off the apple website. That not bias at all.

This has been gone over a million times. The reason why android isn't as "smooth" as iOS is that the overall ui is not taking advantage of the gpu. It has zero to do with adobe or flash.

I tried one out at best buy today as well. I certainly like the form factor 100x better than the iPad. And yeah, Android still isn't quite as smooth as iOS.

But the biggest disappointment for me? I did not find the build quality all that great. Sure, it was a demo model, but it didn't feel like it was worth $600 (or say, $450/500 if there were a wifi only model). I'm not saying it felt cheap. It just felt, mediocre given the ipad brought it's HQ build to the $500 price point.

But regardless, the real problem is the lack of a wifi only version. And I'm still more a netbook/small notebook person. Good to see it wasn't crap like the other android tablets so far.

The practical effect of this decision is that the Galaxy Tab is effectively an 'over-sized phone' for the purposes of web content. For example, an iPad-style side-navigation section just won’t fit on the screen. We think it’s probably best to treat it as a phone with big pixels rather than a true tablet."

One problem with using Android 2.2 for tablets, Sencha explained, was that "when the Android browser gets ready to animate anything — whether it’s a CSS animation or a plain old page scroll — it shifts from high-quality to low-quality display mode. In low-quality mode, it turns off anti-aliasing (presumably on the theory that since things are moving, you won’t notice the quality degradation.) This would be less noticeable on a smaller device. But on the 7″ Galaxy Tab, the resulting pixelation is striking, particularly since it switches to low-quality mode as soon as it detects a touch start event (but before anything moves)."

"We’re still waiting for the first awesome Android tablet," the report observed.

Yea I played with one a week or so in an at&t store. Its really a pretty solid device. I still wouldn't pay for it, though.
