I touched the fastest computer in the world earlier today.

Also, the third fastest. And I saw the world's largest laser.

Cool fact:
The cooled air that enters the data center in which the fastest and third fastest computers in the world are located is 55 degrees as it comes in through the floor. After it passes over the machines and leaves through the ceiling, it's 130 degrees. You can see wavy "heat lines" coming off the top of the machines.

The data center has a pproximately 3 *PETA*bytes of hard disk space, and a robotic tape storage system with space for 16 petabytes of backup tapes.

just so were clear...you touched the two IBM supercomputers at Livermore national institute right?

EDIT: yep posted before u posted the link...or at least thoguht i would/did

You know what would be cool? A documentary about how they made, and put it up, and the problems they ran into, doing so.

That's sweet.

Unfortunately, money says the Gov has something more powerful that we'll never know about!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. The NSA probably has a supercomputing cluster five times that size doing brute force cracking of 512 bit encryption keys right now 🙂

Have you read Digital Fortress by Dan Brown?
Good book.

I doubt that, unless the have gone quantum.

There are rumors that they have.

The probability of that is very low. Quantum computing is in its infancy.
