I guess Bill was full of crap again.

I just built a computer for a friend. I got a copy of XP oem with the purchase of a WD 30 gig HD. So far so good. Installed XP and installed all the drivers for the modem and soundcard and the video card. It now rebbots after locking up after 3 minutes or so. Sometimes it just hangs and doesn't reboot. I did try to install the motherboard drivers to no avail...missing a switch in the setup file /i or something like that.

Shuttle AV18E v.3.1
Celeron 900MHZ
ATI Radeon 700 video card
Soundblaster Live! Sound card
Diamond supra modem..

ATI says that the AGP drivers for the Via chipset are necessary but I can't get them to install...

Microsoft says I should consult the OEM manufacturer...that's me damnit!

Maybe a different Mainboard?

Sounds to me more like a hardware problem than a software problem..Try a different OS and see if you get the same results(IE:hangs, reboots). Maybe try different RAM or try re-seating HSF.

Couple questions that might help you, or at least other people here to help you...

1) Have you tried just installing XP, and running the machine before installing any of the drivers... is it running ok then? Or did it happen after the drivers you installed? If it happened before, maybe it's a hardware problem, if only after then you'll know it's the drivers obviously.

2) What drivers did you install? Were they all XP certified, latest from the web, etc...? (You shouldn't need to install the Via drivers, they're in XP by default, I forget which version 4.32 or .35?)

3) Are there any errors in XP's Event Viewer? They may give a clue. Are there any "!"s in the device manager left over after you installed the drivers?

Thanks folks...I will try some of these suggestions.

Gonna install Win98 and see what happens and then pull all the cards except the video (maybe use a different one to see what happens) and reinstall XP...it is the home version.

The Via software was 4.32...

It does keep attempting to load drivers for IDE bus controller...there is a ! under Raid or SCSI controller in Device manager...this machine has neither but XP keeps detecting it as "New Hardware"

ATI says that the AGP drivers for the Via chipset are necessary but I can't get them to install...

Do you get a dialog box that says this when trying to install the ATI drivers, or did you see this at ATI's website. I myself am using the VIA drivers that came with WinXP (Home ver. BTW) and have had zippo reason to upgrade to the latest 4in1's. As far as the ! with the RAID/SCSI thing goes, can't explain why it would think that you have a RAID controller. I just looked at that board online and saw no RAID controller there(this is the one with lone ISA slot isn't it?)..Odd. If you try XP again, install with no other cards than neccessary and see how that goes. Then add one card at a time 'till done.
