I thought URL shorteners were banned?

I don't get this. The AT forums, use dynamitedata redirects, to make money off of purchase links on the forum. I can live with that. Then, supposedly, URL shorteners were banned. Many of us presumed that this was to prevent people getting around the dynamitedata forwards, but some mods claimed that this wasn't the reason.

Well now, there's a post from Anandtech Deals, here:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2162685
That uses URL shorteners, and doesn't use the dynamitedata redirects!

WTF? Color me WAAAY confused.

Did they do this, precisely because the DD redirects screw up so often? If so, how does AT make any money off of this sale?

For regular members they are banned. They are not banned for AnandTech Deals, as those are paid advertisers whom we can't set rules for.

Keep in mind that URL shorteners were banned because people were abusing them to hide malicious links, and spammers used them to try to hide their domains. I'm not sure why on Earth you'd think it has anything to do with DD.
