i think you have to put the normal format into the little $ box

writing it out like that on the long dollar line should be ok, but putting that into the small $ box, i don't think you can do that

If anything, I think that would belong in the box and the words (e.g. two ten-thousandths plus the base of the natural logarithm raised to the power of jointly the imaginary unit and pi plus....) would be on the line
