I thought these guys at Frys were supposed to KNOW computers...

...I went to Frys b/c I needed heatsink (and I bought a 2000JB and Wildarms 3 for 19.99!! OMFG the cheapest I've found it anywhere was 19.99 so I'm so happy) and I figured "Look for a nice 80 CM fan that is adjustable so I can decide how loud it is" and a copper heatsink - SK-7 or something.

So I go there and I go straight to the Mobo area with all the OEM parts...now working in that section you'd expect that they'd make sure that these guys were supposed to konw what is going on.

I go to a guy hes old and tall and somewhat slim, "Hey sir, do you where your guy's heatsinks are?" and he is all "over here"

Now he takes me there and I take a quick glance and assume he knows what I'm talking about and I say , "Yeah I'm wondering if you guys have the SK-7 - I want to cool a 1700+ tbred A but it won't be overclocked but I plan to run a 80cm fan at low speeds and I feel safe knowing its under the threshold because that is how I am"

He then looks at me and says, "Now Athlon? That is made by AMD which means that any of these heatsinks that say P4 on them are not for the Athlonx"

And I just look dumbfounded at him

And then he says like he is some n00b reading out of his "fry's guide" and liek I don't know what I'm talking about, "Now processors these days because they are so fast are REALLY hot! So in order to compoensate that companies engineer these heatsinks in order to make processors cooler"

"Uh...yeah - I just want a SK-7 or comparable copper heatsink"

"Now I wouldn't reccomend that - These companies when they engineer the heatsinks they put them in "combos" because when they can dictate the heatsink and cooling it increases efficency because of hot processors are"

"No - I just want a copper heatsink" /me grabs one, opens it and looks how small it is - looks at the price and I want to laugh they wanted 14.99

And he just kept repeating the same thing and you could tell he had no confidence. Then he stood there and started coughing like something is out of place and I say "Oh sorry for bothering you - you can go help someone else"

But what amazes me and why it sucks is he really had no idea!! For 5 straight minutes he sat there talking about how hot processors these days are and why its better to get a "combo" because they are "engineered for better preformance"

I ended up getting nothing b/c I thought they were too expensive (I''ll just order @ newegg) but even though what I want for a 1700+ @ default voltage is slightly odd I still want that but when I told him that its like he ignored it and started at the top of his manual or something.

Anyway since i got a HDD and Wild Arms 3 (unexpctect find for cheap 😀 ) I was happy...

In general, the people at Fry's are idiots. However, some are intelligent. You have to give some people slack though. There is no way a person can know everything there is to know. Granted, that person was an idiot, but still...

The workers are just retail workers trained to sell more and more. They are not really educated for the most part about their product because retail workers are disposable and real training is expensive and not worth it most of the time. That said, I work retail and it can suck.

no joke. was there a quantity limit? that'd be worth flying out for if there wasn't. 😉

At least they spoke english when you went. I haven't been to Fry's in a couple of years, but the last i was there (the one in anaheim, CA), I swear 95% of the guys working there came straight from the 7-11 down the street. I'm not racist, but the staff looked like they were hiring exclusively out of new delhi. No joke. I know some of the other guys will know what i'm talking about.

That didn't really bother me, except that i couldnt understand a flamin thing they were saying. But the really bad thing was that they were all clueless when it came to hardware. I didn't run into a single competent person there. I felt sorry for the other customers in there asking them what motherboard was good.

But you want to see something REALLY funny? Go to staples and ask their "techs" some off the wall question. Or hell, ask them ANY basic hardware question. Watch them squirm. That's what happens when you pay your "techs" $7.00 an hour.

If you pay people close to minimum wage, you get minimum wage class workers.. If you want experts, you have to pay them what you're not willing to afford.
