I thought the X800XL sucked at Ocing?!?!

I put on my Artic Silencer 5 the other night and started overclocking.

STOCK 400/490

OC'd 450/575

I am blown away that my ful load temps didn't go up at all - 54c and thats in my DELL case :Q

The FPS increase for most games was about 8-10 FPS (Battlefield runs WAY SMOOTHER)

New 3dmark05 score - 5480
 
A decent overclock, but not exactly mind blowing. Core speed is barely 10% over. Memory is excellent though at nearly 20%
 
+10/20% for a 3DM05 gain of 5% ... anything is better than nothing I suppose. 8-10 FPS in actual games sounds much nicer, but again, how much of a percentage is more important really and especially whether it makes a difference betwixt unplayable and playable or allows higher quality settings.
 
Yeah but you have to consider other cards. 6600 cards at 300 get to 500-550mhz overclock. 6800GT goes from 350 to 430. And those are on stock cooling (not Arctic cooling). Most x800xl's get to 435-440 on stock cooling from 400.
 
The percentages aren't really that big, I know

The main difference I see with my overclock is my minimum FPS during games.

Take for example: Battlefield 2

I usually get about 50-70 FPS during regular play, but when there is 2 tanks, 6 guys, and 2 choppers and explosions all in my screen it used to drop to about 30 FPS. But after my overclock my FPS haven't dropped below 45 FPS - which in turn makes gameplay much smoother and keeps jerky turning and shooting to a bare minimum.

So even though the percentages are not huge, the "real world" performance increase is pretty substantial IMO.
 
lol, mr. messiah, are you not using water? Zalman I see... weren't you using water before? I just remember you commenting on it for some reason... And your NP is just one they clocked slower, the xl is actually on a process that doesn't seem to want to clock to high. Besides, you have to oc a 6600 a 100 mhz to get the same as a 50 mhz jump on an xl or 6800GT. Mine is on stock cooling, the mem could probabl go faster but it is fine as if for me 🙂

Actually its pretty well known that the X800XL doesn't OC as well as most past ATI cards as well as the X800XT and the X850's. Not to mention the 6600 and 6800 series all seem to overclock pretty well.

I had some problems with texture corruption with EEII, but its just limited to that game. I thought my card was dying. I used to run an arctic silencer rev.3, but I sold it to my brother to buy the zalman. Its no better, no worse, so I kinda wasted my money. Even so, mine is a 100MHz over the standard pro speeds, and the core apparently wasn't even rated to do that, if it was in a NP.
 
Yes, your 9800 does have an awesome oc, I will give you that... I have never had anything oc that well... 🙁
 
DId not say it was like the X800 or 850, those are geat ocr's. BUt I have not heard anyone complain about not ocing them well. Guess we read diff forums 😉
 
At first the X800XL's were not because they were being designed on the new 110nm process. As the process matures, it is likely that you will see a larger OC.

You must have done something wrong grimlykindo. I got 5406 3dmark05 with my pasivly cooled gigabyte x800xl at 425/530 speeds.

PS: Nice overclock tough...
 
X800XL does not use low-K doping in the 110nm process. More prone to current leakage between transistors so you will get much less of a o/c than any other X800 130nm low-K card. It is one of the reasons the XL was offered so cheaply. Low-K does not come cheap.
