Wow.This is a Chernobyl Nuclear Station itself. Even now people there work, they build a special cover on top of the blown up reactor, so that radiation could not spread further. They are allowed to work inside not more than 2 minutes a day in special protective uniform, and they get $1000 monthly salary for this 2 minute job a day, which is 5 times bigger than an average salary in this region. Many people try to tune their the dosage indicators so that they show less numbers than they got in reality so that they could work more and earn more.

Are those people crazy or what? I wouldn't mind taking a tour - from the air. There's no way I'd step foot anywhere near there, though, unless it was through a magical transparent lead box with 4' thick walls.

I'd go through on foot ... after making a donation at a sperm bank, to ensure non-flippered offspring.

Sadly, some of the comments to the photos are incorrect. For example, the monument is not to the people who tried to shut down the reactor (there was nothing to shutdown - it blew). It's the monument to the firefighters who were first to respond (the actual personnel was partially buried by the wreckage, but some made it out alive and wrote memoirs). The firemen didn't completely realize just how much radiation there is (the counters they and the personnel had were off the charts), but they went straight in and did what they could. All of them died days to weeks later in horrible pain.

And I can see that quite a few of the photos are staged (with dolls on the ground, etc). There are quite a few people coming through there, so dolls won't be lying on the ground like that.
Oh well. Photographers love to do dramatic shots.

Hmm, I wonder how many people there still die horrible death from radiation poisoning. Must not be nice to have every single organs system start failing, while you skin starts to rot for no reason.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. The dolls, etc. had to come from somewhere, and I doubt the photographers brought nasty, messed up toys with them to place in the photos to add effect. Besides, if I were a tourist visiting Chernobyl, I sure as hell wouldn't touch a dirty, radiation soaked child's toy - let alone pick it up and keep it as a souvenir.![]()
