I thought second interviews you talk to higher level people, not lower.

I have a second interview at a company in the SF Bay area, and instead of speaking wither higher ups than the first I am talking with lower level people.

The first interview was with the head of the department I applied too, so their isn't much above him though.

Yo, let me tell you this. Sometimes, second interviews are used to see how well you interact with lower level people in the organization. You impressed the big guys, but they want to see what the little guys think of you.

EDIT: Damn, I see you corrected the "yo" to a "you".

With my department, the first interview is with the person in charge to decide if you meet his qualifications. The second interview is with the team members you'll actually be working with. Then everyone confers. The manager isn't going to disrupt everyone's day for a person he would never hire. That makes perfect sense to me.

it's not that you're guaranteed the job, they're just interviews.

hype is that if you qualify for a 2nd interview, it means they're going to take you, not always true.

it's not the rank, it's the types of questions they ask, and how you respond to them, and if they "like" what they want to hear, and also if they "like" you.

example: can you work on sundays?
answer: no

reason for the "now hiring sign" (we need sunday workers)

once you tell them you can't work on sundays, even if they do a second interview, there is almost no way you're getting in. they will talk and talk because they can and want to, but just because of that, you will still be told they will "CALL YOU" ... and instead of giving them a call back from your cell phone, you could decide to just visit them in person, to get a direct answer. and if they say they need sunday workers, you don't want to do it, then you're not qualified. either way, second interviews might follow up with drug testing or not, however doesn't mean you're going to score a job.

reason why you apply for multiple jobs and not get too comfortable just because you dressed your best to two consecutive interviews in a row at three different jobs.

life is life, good luck.

oh yeah, a job's a job.

Why is this a problem? Are you so important that you need to speak to the CEO before taking a job?

It means they interviewer liked you and now they want to see if your future co-workers do as well. It's very common.

I'm going to agree as the interview process isn't rocket science.

As someone else asked, did you expect to talk to the CEO? It's not a test where you work your way up through the ranks. It is usually the reverse where your interviewed by the highest ranking guy you'll interact with daily, then you work your way down.

There is no guarantee you have the job even if they tell you to go get a drug test. I am not talking about not passing it. I am talking about even if you pass the drug test.

I just got a new job (starting May 29th)

The first interview was with my immediate supervisor.

The 2nd interview was people I'd be working with on a horizontal level AND a couple of upper mgmt people.

3rd interview was with the head of the New York office - turned out to be a really nice guy.

He asked 2 questions that kinda surprised me

1. You'll have a woman for a boss and the other (my job position) is also a woman ... will you be comfortable with that?

2. All the four working under you are older than you , much older. How would you deal with that?

Correct. The bottom line is the hiring managers are looking to see if you have the high level skills, but the staff that you talk with is probing to see what you actually know in practice, if they like you, and if you're an overall good fit to bring in.

I've conducted a lot of these, since my director knows broadly what we do, but when the folks get to me, they still dont know the job specifics nor have they been interviewed on their particular skills and work habits in depth. Through that, I get a handle on their personality, whether they're a "project" who can think well but needs to learn the applicable skills, etc.

Remember, you're looking for a job. Everyone's above you at that point, so everyone you speak with is a higher-up and should be treated with respect. You think I'm not paying attention to see how people treat our admin assistants, HR secretary, recruiters, etc? I don't care how qualified or great a fit you are, treating the non-management poorly or condescending is a disqualifier.

Hopefully this is some advice for any would-be job seeker reading this thread.

The first people who interviewed you told everyone in the office what an idiot you were and nobody believed them. They decided to invite you back so others could corroborate their story.

Make sure you get some extra graduation tickets to have them their when you walk up to get your diploma. Also make sure they don't see that $10k you have sewn into your clothing as it will hurt your negotiating power.

2nd interview is usually with future immediate coworkers. If they don't think they can work with you, you are toast.

The higher ups sent out a mass e-mail:

"OMGZ you got to get a look at this guy's chin"

So the lower-end workers scheduled you for an interview to get a good laugh.

The 2nd interview is more technical. You are being interviewed by your peers because they do and know your job. Usually these people are leads among their group. They will sound the bullsh!t alarm if you can't answer some basic questions or seem sketchy.
