I thought SCSI devices were to be switched on first.

I have an Adaptec 2940UW Pro card on which I have the Yamaha external 8424s writer and a Pioneer External 6x DVD.

If I switch on these drives before the system they do not get recognised, I have to switch them on immediately after the beep on booting to get them recognised.

Is this the way it is suppposed to be ?? I get only a time of 2 seconds when I can power on the SCSI drives to get them recognised. If I do a soft boot and then switch on the drives they do not get recognised. Have to press the reset button and wait for the BEEP.

I tried the latest BIOS from Adaptec but it made things worse.... so I am back to the original BIOS which came with the card.

Another thing this card takes forever during the boot process.... any way to speed this up ??? I tried the options in the cards BIOS but no luck with various settings.

That is not correct! SCSI devices should be powered on before the computer. Sounds like you have a termination or cable problem. You can speed up the boot process by going into the SCSI BIOS on the adaptec card and telling to NOT look for devices on SCSI ID's you are not using. If you only use SCSI ID0 then turn the scan for all others off.

reality bites....

Thanks for the reply

When my terminations are wrong this SCSI card stops the boot process and says that.

Have already disabled scan on SCSI ID's not being used. No difference.

You should NEVER power on external SCSI devices after turning on your machine. Because of the way the SCSI interface works, it could potentially damage your hardware.

Oh No !!!! Now what am I supposed to do ??? The drives do not get recognised if I switch them on before powering up the computer !!!! They only get recognised if powered up immediately after the Beep from the computer.

What is likely to get damaged ???... the SCSI card ???
