I thought places like MTV could do at least some good sound editing!

I'm watching MTV2 UK's "5th Birthday" gig, and The Darkness are on at the moment. As you know, there's some swearing, and it's before 9pm here in the UK.

Anyway, when it gets to the swearing in the songs, they're cutting out the whole sound. This is sucky cos i've got it up reasonably loud (The Darkness are cool) but all this sound cutting right out is pissing me off!

Can't they just cut the mic out that he's singing into?

All that money and expensive equipment and they can't do that!!!

Having said that, I'm holding out for the Darkness, the video where they go clay pigeon shooting with guitars rocks :D

I assume this is live and they're operating with a delay, and there's a censor (a lawyer or group of lawyers usually) sitting by a button. The signal is already mixed, and the censor is just waiting for any "dirty word" so he can go into action.

I know what you're saying about just muting his mike, the all-or-nothing censoring with live music is like killing a fly with a sledgehammer. I think in a live situation though, if you give a censor control over many different mikes (anybody miked up can start dropping F-bombs, not just the lead singer), it becomes too complicated to deal with and the odds of a bad word slipping through are increased. At least that's my guess.

Now, if it's not live, there's no excuse for that.

If they mute the mic at a live concert, the audience can't hear him either.

They do it on a live basis and it's not a perfect science. I'd like to see you successfully do better.

I've noticed that MTV's home market has MUCH better editing than any toehr forms of it outside of the US.

You're right. The original poster is referring to a specific program on MTV2.
