I thought of a way to defend long field goals in football.

What would be the rule if a team kicked a field goal and a player from the other team stood by the goal post and jumped up and blocked football before it went over the goal posts? Of corse it would have to be a kick that barely went over the goal post. Would that be legal?

just another random thought: is it a penalty if a player lifted another player up in an attempt to block a FG?

I believe that is against the rules because you are jumping off another person and I don't think that is legal.

What if a player (some guy that benches ~300) threw their own kicker up and he blocks the fg?

AFAIK, a player is allowed to block a FG by jumping next to the FG post and batting it away just before it went over. However, one player cannot lift another player up in any sort of way to block a FG. The penalty is called "leaping".

I was going to say why not have two players run sideways towards each other and jump to attempt to block the ball.

Have you ever stood near a field goal? Can YOU jump up HIGHER than the bottom of the field goal to block a football? Can you jump 40 feet into the air to block a field goal that's kicked high?

I think not. Stupid idea.

It's 10 feet tall. Players dunk the football over it all the time. A very long field goal isn't going to go very far over the posts. In my original post I said it would have to barely go over the goal posts.

All they need to do is put a trampoline in the endzone, and have the player time the jump off the trampoline to jump up and block the kick.

I think they should have a sniper in the lightower, he should just take out the kicker.

I've stood by a field goal. It's only 10ft tall (i used to be able to dunk in high school). As he stated (which calling his idea stupid yet not actually READING what he wrote....yeah its the idea thats stupid) is that if it's a long field goal, you'd be able to block it with your hands if you could get into position.

I don't know if he can but I know there are a number of professional players that can, quite easily.

As suggested by them taking the football and slam dunking it through the goal posts after a touchdown.

The problem is timing the jump itself - you would have to time it so that you made sure you hit the football DOWN - basically you would have to jump so your hands were anywhere from 11-12 feet from the ground, and swat it at the exact time to knock it down - if it hits off your hand then goes in (which could happen in any number of ways - consider that you're jumping UP so if you mistime the jump you'll hit the ball UP as well) because you mistimed it - well that would just suck now wouldn't it? :D

What if, say, they had a guy with bionic legs, and he was able to jump up high enough to block? Would that be OK?

Nope because if you take your helmet off it's an automatic 15 yard penalty.
