Western propaganda has certainly provided a diminished understanding of Iran, at least in terms of separating it from the quagmire of other Middle Eastern countries. The people of Iran are divided by economic standing and by religious devotion. Those who are relatively speaking middle to upper class will have very good education (male and female) and will tend to lean towards a progressive social and political philosophy. They are the most adamant when it comes to supporting a separation of church and state and the core of the green movement. Many of these people apply for the U.S. green card lottery annually and once they get here they basically strip all Islamic affiliation after a couple years. Others come on student visas just to escape with hopes of getting work or green cards through marriage. Many are doctors/engineers/dentists that come here and are willing to basically start graduate work again.
Iran takes great strides to educate its people, which seems contrary to what an Islamic republic should want to do. Yet they do despite realizing that increasing numbers of its educated citizens want nothing more than to be citizens of the world.
