I thought DIVX used MPEG 4 compression, but when I compress a file it show it as an AVI when completed, not a MPEG

well.. DivX IS using ripped-off version of MPEG-4 compression.
it's just a term.... and right.. for some reasons the result is an AVI file

Divx3.11 - used a beta version of micosofts's mpeg4 codec which is currently used for wma files.

Divx4 and 5 - uses the mpeg4 standard.

avi is just a wrapper format for video. It does not compress of encode anything by itself. An avi file has some stuff in it's header to tell the video player program (or the OS) which codec it needs to actually play. If you don't have that codec, you can't play the avi.
