I thought Athlon 1333 was shipped unlocked?

...but I guess the one I bought isn't. I'm running an ECS K7S5A, with the unofficial overclockers' BIOS, and it doesn't offer a menu for the multiplier. CPUCooL doesn't either. I'm not in a mood for disassembling my PC right now so I can't look at the bridges, but I do remember that this is an AHYJAR chip. So the question is, did AMD start multiplier-locking the Athlon 1333, or is it just that this board won't let you fiddle the multiplier? If the former, I'll get one of those magic pens and take everything apart. If the latter, can anyone point me at another BIOS or a how-to-modify-your-board page please?

The problem is in K7S5A. The unofficial BIOS provides different FSB speed. It never provided multiplier adjustment and you have to do some hardcore physical mods if you want access to multiplier.

Damn. Looks like I might be doing some mods to my mobo. Maybe I should have bought a board with overclocking options. OK, now which of the pins on socket A do I have to cut the traces to?

Maybe I'll do this when I can afford another mobo.

<< Athlon 1.2 GHz are the only ones coming out 'unlocked'. >>

Wrong.

I have an unlocked 1.4GHz Athlon as a proof.
[edit] thats AMD Athlon THUNDERBIRD core. Not the XP1600+

In case your curious, its an AYHJA purple core.

OC's to 1.53GHz.(currently running at 1.4GHz). Its my policy to not overclock my main productive rig.

The complete mod plan can be found here

It is VERY extensive and I'm pretty sure its quite time consuming.

PS: want to know how you find link like that? go to GOOGLE and type in "k7s5a mod multiplier" without the quotation mark.

Jerboy - thanks for that link, that's exactly the page I'd been trying to find on OCworkbench. It looks more straightforward than some of the other board mod articles I've seen, particularly since it doesn't involve cutting any tracks on the board, nor does it involve trying to solder onto the bridges or resistors on the top of the CPU.

Wind,
My 1.2 GHz TBIRD is unlocked without having to do the pencil trick or anything else. I can go change the multiplier in my BIOS and o/c that puppy if I wanted to. Since I don't o/c I can't remember what bridges are connected L1? But at any rate when AMD ships the 1.2 GHz TBirds all the bridges are connected to get the multiplier of 9.0. At first I didn't know they were already 'unlocked' until I posted in AMDZone's forums about the 1.2 GHz already being unlocked. Linky here!

Jerboy,
I'll take your word on that about the 1.4 GHz XP's. I had no idea or ever heard that they were being shipped unlocked. Learn something everyday... ;)

motoamd,
Again...read clearly...Jerboy meant 1.4 Athlon (T-bird)...not XP (Palomino).

could try buying a adapter from plycon that allow multiplier adjustment once your cpu is unlocked. i have seen this work well with the same board you have

When I got my 1.4's home (Athlon) I thought I must be really special for them both to be unlocked.

Later on, I found out that all Athlons 1.2 and above are unlocked out of the box. Wheeeeeeeee!

(Still think I'm special tho!)

Again I stressed. Not all 1.2 Ghz & above Athlon is unlocked...although most of them r.
