I thought Abit was putting just Rubycon caps on all their boards now?

I just got a KN8 Ultra from Newegg. I just checked the caps on it last night, and lo and behold, they were all OST caps! Not one Rubycon or any other good type of cap on it! I am pretty dissapointed and a bit leary of having leaking caps after a few months. I forgot to check the caps before I sent in the upc for the rebate. Anyway, I guess I am stuck with it, although I sent an email to Abit telling them my dissapointment and asking about if they are actually putting all Rubycon caps on their boards now, just to see what they say. I won't have all the parts to build for another month, so I guess I won't get to test he board for a bit yet... so is it just luck of the draw no? Is there any chance that OST has made improvements to their caps? I read this on their site:
To meet different demand from customers, OST has been authorized by Japanese aluminum electrolytic capacitor manufacturer TOSHIN to not only distribute all series products, but also be the only global marketing partner of TOSHIN.
I am not sure if this is good or bad or if it signifies anything at all..

After the bad caps situation of a few year's back, I would think Abit will have checked out these new caps thoroughly to avoid a repeat.

There's far too much mythology put into this. As if OST or others couldn't make any "good" caps.

There isn't any stock left of the stolen-formula electrolyte, so how should anyone make any capacitors that fail as dramatically as those made with it around 2001?

Where did abit state they only putting Rubycon capacitors on their boards?
From a manufacturing point of view that would be stupid. If Rubycon had a capacitor production problem then abit couldn't manufacture their boards. They'd have to have supplier/fitment options on minor parts like capacitors.

I doubt abit would buy caps that were known to fail, even though ost caps had a bad rep in the past, it's been a few years, and technology improves pretty fast.

As Elite as you are...I beg to differ with you.

Several Taiwanese and a couple Chinese cap providers import Nipponese electrolyte for use in thier production. SamXcon in Hong Kong is one, they are a fairly new cap provider.
The VRMs used on mainboards & VGA cards must be serviced by filtering caps w/very low ESR. Several things will kill a cap in less than a year, extended use with high operating temps, poor electrolyte, moisture entering the cap in any way during assembly, poor aluminum alloy use in foil production. This can be compounded by a POS PSU sending dirty current to the componets downstream combined with poor board cooling.
The output caps on a good PSU will be low ESR value, this helps the board caps run cooler.

It is known, that the foil produced in China/Taiwan has trace elements of copper that cause gassing/venting. Then the cap dries out 😉 This is a fact.

The Nipponese produced foil is 99.8% pure aluminum. I have a link for you to study.

spittledip (sounds like you dip 😉 ), the best way to buy a mainboard is in person. We have Fry's close by and looking at the product first is the best way. Your OST should last 3 years as long as the case has decent air flow. I got some 3 year old GeForce cards and an Albatron board (in trade) with venting OST for recap. My Intel D865PERLK is on the "to watch list for bad caps". At 4.5 years it's still OK.

It is known that a board recapped with Jap caps will OC better. Read at badcaps.net, they do have an Abit forum. *I think* Abit, MSI & Jetway have settled class action suits. You can read about it at badcaps. Intel will RMA this board at any time for cap failure but only for the original owner.

Sorry for the scattered post but I did feel like blabbering. Peter, I'd PM you if I could. You offer alot and I respect your input to this board but the cap issue is far from over.

...Galvanized

Thanks for the replies- I feel more hopeful about the board now. I would buy a board in person but the only thing we have around here is compusa, bestbuy and circuit city.. so obviously I would be getting ripped off dollar-wise as those places are so expensive.
