I thought a crossover cable would be my best bet.

Make sure you set the IP's to be on the same subnet - e.g. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2.

Is the cable plugged into the right ethernet ports?

Is it a phone cable?

Is it cat5 at least?

Do the cards have drivers instaled?

Is TCP/IP installed?

Are they both set to static per above?

On the same network as above?

Yep. You have to manually set the ip's of the two computers. Really annoying imo.

You are plugging cable into NIC on PC-1 with other end into NIC on PC-2?

Did you configure the machines to use the same workgroup?

Yep. You have to manually set the ip's of the two computers. Really annoying imo.
